E:\>del ff3.exe
E:\ff3.exe
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Is there any way to find out what the *****~%!"£&%* is using this file? My dad sent me some solid works (3d cad software) file that was supposed be a simple viewer with the work he'd been doing. Turns out it was the wrong format, I tried renaming it to exe to see if that's all it needed (clutching at straws I know) but it didn't work. "Bugger, I'll resend" he says. I try to delete and get that. I'd rather not reboot my pc to sort this, is there no other way to get rid of this @~^@&@$%&** file?

TIA :\

Try WhoLockMe. Never used it, though have been meaning to install it for yonks since it's been sitting on my hard disk for a year. Looks like it will do the job.

My first born will be called Shovel. Or Ben, whatever takes my fancy nearer the time.

It's as I thought, Explorer has locked it up (about 10 times over). It seems a little absurd that it's explorer that has locked it and won't let me delete it for no reason whatsoever. Gah, Windows angers the piss out of me.

Thanks though shov :D

No probs. On the grounds that it does actually work, I may well install it myself now :)

I'd also suggest that Ben would be less inclined to get beaten up at school than Shovel (unless Shovel grows up to be built like a brick shithouse, in which case he'd do alright).

*Sorry, I know this is getting far too "General forum" for [Hard|Soft]ware, but c'mon, that was irresistible.

i find that explorer does all kinds of really queer things after a few days uptime

and also that booting ino safe mode allows you to delete all sorts, good for geting rid of spyware etc.

I've had this problem on win2k also: deleting a file via ANY gui-based program will result in a "file in use" error... as well as having a process stuck in the background. Killing the process and trying again ends up the same way. Direct ye mice to the command prompt and delete it via that.
