I can't think of a million things, but i know a few:

Religious reasons. Like me, i don't care for church and the whole christian shibabble, but i would care about the person going.

Medical reasons, like -tris said, getting out of the hostipal for a quickie trip to the cemetery ain't a possibility. You usually check out for a longer period between the hospital and cemetary.

Financial reasons, living in different country, studying and so forth. Even if you can't afford to go to your little cousins sisters aunts brothers daughters funeral, you'd love to see it no?

Well...those cover all sortsa things allready...ah yes, the old enemy of church...

Military: Sorry officer, i know the evul terrorists are attacking, but i gotta jet for a funeral.
