I hope Underground dont budge on this

BBC NEWS | England | London | Tube workers to strike over pay

How can The Union demand another payrise during a slump? these wankers strike at least twice a year over pay and now there is no inflation how can they demand more pay? for less hours too!

Drives me mad, i dont understand how in the current times where so many are looking for work these shits keep demanding more

What London needs is an Agency with trained staff so when the Underground Unions demand more pay TfL just says go fuck yourself and get the agencies in. After striking a week on 0 pay the staff will learn fast not to strike

I work for the buses and the things our drivers go through in a day to day basis is alot worse in what these drivers etc go through. A driver can go through a whole career without an incident, a driver probably wont go a month! And you can count on one hand how many times bus drivers have been on strike in the last ten years, the tubes... at least twice a year!

I'm just ranting and im sure once i think clearly i will construct things better.

Maybe they should offer them some sort of pay-by-merit service so they'll get off their fucking arses and sort out the shitty service they provide.

Couple of things. 3k have voted (2800 in favour to strike), but 6k have not according to Boris. Also they have not said "yeah service will be untouched whilst we discuss this matter".

They want a 5% pay rise, but they also want all these proposed job cuts to end as it seems they were 'promised' this would not happen. I can understand them being mad about job cuts, but the 5% pay rise is a joke!

Hopefully they did this to get attention and scare everyone (which it's done). They will then hopefully sit down and sort this out without a strike.

I really hope they dont budge, i think currently 1% this year and 0.5% over 3 years is great. Its more than what we got. Big fat stinking 0% this year.

It's the same old shit every year. They hold London to ransom. Police, doctors and firemen cannot strike and they provide a much more valuable service. Money grabbing *****.

There is some economic theory that shows that increasing pay rates can actually lead to more employment.

However, I don't think it could be applied to this market.

But the LU are having to cut jobs so this theory wont work

It's ridiculous as well, the job cuts apply to duplicated management roles as a result of metronet no longer running things.

Not really, tube and train workers seem to be living in a different reality, we are not in the climate where employers throw money at you and safeguard jobs. It may not be nice, but striking to protect jobs and increases pay will only create long term difficulties, not improve the service.

Oh no I think you may have misunderstood me? I said I understood them wanting to strike because of job losses, however with the news you mentioned I changed my outlook.

It was not meant to be sarcastic or anything.

I understood you fine, what I am saying is that there is no reason for them to strike -even if it was purely for job losses. Job losses are inevitable in the current climate. What does striking and affecting thousands of commuters and costing LU and the TFL thousands of pounds really accomplish? It simply delays the inevitable, and leaves the organisations as a whole in a worse condition going forward.

Yeah job losses are inevitable, but from this piece of text it sounds like they had some pre-arranged job security...so to go back on that decision would be pretty harsh. But like you say, they have duplicated management roles.

It has accused LU of refusing to abide by an agreement which ensured job security and ruled out compulsory redundancies which would put 3,000 jobs at risk.

Um sorry to be picky but didn't the firemen all go on strike a few years ago and the military had to come in and do their job for them...and they had to use the decrepit old Green Goddess engines because the firemen wouldn't let them use the appliances?

Though that was a very poor show myself, if your in an emercency service strinking should be forbidden. As for tubes I don't know about them because we don't have any down here but if the service is shite then they shouldn't get a saussage.

You should get paid what you are worth in terms of doing a good/bad job imo.

On the bright side tubs are easy to drive and will probably become automated in a few years so they will all lose their jobs....lets see them try to automate a bus?

I agreed with the Fireservice striking, them and paramedics get paid so so badly considering what they do. And when you think tube drivers are on £40k for basically 4 hours work a day (on some routes) and 52 days holidays a year

Nah they get paid well above the national average, yes the job is dangerous but they go into it with their eyes open. As for tube drivers, overpaid donut eating monkey faced bastards the lot of them, sack them all and employ Poles on minimum wage.
