I wanna set up my own ftp thingy(tm), Embattle did a top guide for doing your own web space once, and I kinda need a total start to finish guide on doing this as well.

Sorry guys but I'm old and know little about this type of stuff.

Download a bit of FTP software (I use Bulletproof FTP Server), if you have a dynamic ip it's a good idea to get a dynamic redirect so people can always find your ftp without having to locate your IP, I use dyndns.com, they are free and fantastic quality.

Once you've got the software installed, setup what directories you want to share, how you want them accessed. Then setup access rights, either allow anonymous access in which case anyone can get on or disable anonymous and require everyone to have passwords and logins (these again will be setup by you).

If you want a slightly more indepth guide as to using bpftp and dyndns lemme know and I'll walk you through it step by step (it is pretty easy however)

Dynamic I.P. = I.P. that changes each time you connect to the internet.

However, if you have broadband then your I.P. will remain the same. Only really have to worry about it if your on Dial-up

His IP will change on NTL cable, not that often, but it will.

www.nitrolic.com <- GuildFTPd, free ftp server
www.smartftp.com <- SmartFTP, free ftp client

Set those 2 up & as scooba says, use dyndns so you can access them from anywhere easily. Fortunatly for me I dont have to use dyndns as on BlueYonder my IP is essentially static.

I use Serv-U ftp and it's a pretty simple server.

If you don't get hold of Scoobs, ask me and I'll help you Trem :)

not true at all. Almost all the DSL services use a dynamic IP. Cable IPs are more static, but change every couple of months on average.

tbh running an ftp isn't remotely as hard as you may think.

I use Serv-U FTP (great stuff, really easy and self explanatory, and dyndns (but that's just so I have a perm host online, rather than a dynamic ip).

I'd recommend serv-u, as if you have the slightest bit of brain you'll have an ftp up in 5 minutes.

I agree, serv u rocks. (The latest version is a bit poor though, seek out 2 if you can be arsed)

I dunno, I like 4.0. Took a while I was used to older versions, but 4 is a lot better for my needs.

Right I set one up yesterday using Serv-U, like you guys said it was a piece of piss.

The problem I had was that I gave my ip and username and password to a trusted sex slave(Mank), and it kept saying his end that the password was wrong. Also is my ftp addy my ip? I couldnt find anything else to suggest any different.

The password is case-sensitive. I've always found password problems are at the user end.;)

Yes, you got that bit right. The wrong password message confirms it.

I use ProFTPd on a Linux box, secure, powerful, and leaving a P2 300 on 24/7 is no big deal. You can use a script to automatically update your DNS info on dyndns when your IP changes .. oh .. er

ProFTPd

Yes, does like ProFTPd, uses quite standard Apache-like config to control users. Fast, secure, and dont use much system resources.
Plus, there is a host of Web based configuration tools you can download (webmin being my fav)
