[19-08-2005] The Camelot Reporter

This week's Camelot Reporter will bring you news about the server clustering, the account termination of a hundred cheaters, the latest fixes to the game and the Games Convention in Leipzig. We will also discuss the security of your account and give you the Midgard Background Piece. To conclude, you will find in this Friday News, all the information necessary to complete the last ML 1 trial, the fight against Cetus…

Server clustering
We are now entering the final testing phase for the server clustering of Orcanie/Carnac and Excalibur/Prydwen. If no major problem is encountered during this phase, the clustering will be carried out next week.
We will remind you again later about the zones that will be clustered as well as the changes likely to occur.

Anti-radar
As you already know, fighting cheaters has always been a priority on DAoC servers. This week, almost a hundred players have been banned because they had used a "radar" type of third-party software, in clear violation of the rules accepted by all in the EULA.

The accounts concerned have been banned from the Dark Age of Camelot European servers once and for all. As a matter of fact, we continue our investigations. The fight against cheaters does not stop here.
Have a good game.

This week's corrections
This week, new quest corrections have been carried out on our servers :
- (Albion) You should now be able to meet Lurd without any problem at the Kobold Frontlines. Just follow carefully the instructions given in your Quest Journal.
- (Hibernia) The meeting with the Possessive Spirit should from now on reboot properly in case of death or release of the characters involved.

We also did a few corrections on the encounters "Atlantis Tablet" and "Silver Horn" so that those would not freeze any more in certain circumstances.

Live from the Games Convention
The Games Convention got underway at Leipzig yesterday morning.
The first presentations of the next expansion 'Darkness Rising' have been shown along with the art competition 'Draw All of Camelot' and the Dark Age of Camelot Quiz. This afternoon the well-known German band Alphaville will make known to us the title of their new album.

Here is a photo of the entrance to our stand and another of our reception area there :

Your account security
This reminder about security issues will be most useful to new players, especially if they benefit from the Dark Age of Camelot free trial offer. As you might already know, the Internet can also be used by some people for malevolent purposes. These people can be online game players intending either to cheat, or to harm other players outside of the game. Some of them aim at retrieving passwords to get access to other players' accounts, and then sometimes delete their characters, steal their objects or violate the code of conduct - a behaviour likely to trigger the closure of the account.

If, for example, you are used to playing in a cybercafé, you have to be aware that some software can record passwords. So if an unscrupulous player came there before you, he could have installed it without the manager noticing it. We advise you to change your password - accessing your account through the Subscription option - whenever you have played on a computer other than yours. More experienced hackers can also access your PC, in particular through instant messengers. Thus, we advise you to do whatever you can to secure your computer access. First of all, you obviously need to have an updated anti-virus and a firewall - you should leave it active when you play DAoC. Then do not leave any passwords accessible in your mailbox : you should delete all emails containing critical information. If you are using a free mailbox service with the option to retrieve lost passwords by asking you questions, do not choose questions with answers that are too easy to guess - for example : "what's your favourite colour ?", "What sport do you practice ?", "What's your birth year ?", "What kind of pet do you have ?"… If you need to keep track of your passwords on your PC, encrypt them.

However, these hackers are relatively rare ; account hacking and characters or objects disappearance actually often originate from people that are close to you and who had the opportunity to see your logins and passwords on your computer. So, don't give these information to anyone and keep them in a safe place only known by you. You are solely responsible for your account security.

If you werent banned for 3 days you'd be playing and we both know it :p

Btw nice to see the ban stick coming out on the radar'ers finally - 100 over all the euro servers not that great though considering the total pop. Would be happier to see 200-300 as i figure thats a more feasible number looking at old statistics mind (2 years old).
