Anyone got it/looking at it?

Just acquired a Digibox, without the card we get a fair few channels, including the main 4 terrestrial, and all the variations (+1 channels, itv2-4, bbc3,4 etc) and more besides. Annoyed verily at the lack of Dave though, which IMO is worth more on it's own than most of Sky put together and is certainly worth the outlay for Freeview, when it works :(
Just looking at getting a Freesat card for the skybox but we'd only get a couple extra channels at all :|
Failing that, I could always wire up the freeview box as well but christ, the amount of cabling that would take, the RF/Scart passthroughs would be funny!

yeah, 20 quid and you get 3 more channels than I've already got without any card at all ;) - and for the time being still missing 5 (no loss) Dave and the likes.

Just get a dodgy box and get all the VM subscriber channels for free?

Not that I'd do such a thing...

Kryten, are you talking about Freesat or Freesat from Sky? They're different; sounds like you're talking about Freesat from sky?

They're different and the same - I'm talking FreeSAT as it stands, the recently launched free to air satellite that isn't just running a sky box. The only real difference with the Sky one is that you get Sky hardware that can also run sky digital etc should you want to upgrade, or in my case you get a card to use in existing hardware, which does exactly the same job as the whole kit you get from the BBC/ITV Freesat - i.e. the box and what not. The latter is better for average people though as it's specifically made for freesat and you don't have to wade through channels you can't get ;)

I don't know much about Freesat from Sky, but am I correct in saying that the Sky hardware won't support HD unless you have the Sky HD box?

I have Freesat and I'm running the Humax Foxsat which is a great little box. The only reason and benefit I bought it over Freeview was it supports HD of which there is the best part of fuck all (BBC HD and ITV HD). ITV HD is good for the footy when it's on, and BBC HD is great eye candy.

They really need more HD content, but it does buy you a slice of subscription free HD and as the technology evolves then I'd expect a lot more HD content. Additionally, the Freesat PVRs aren't out until some time this month according to the website. Lack of PVR functionality is a pisser on my Freesat box, so once they're out I will be selling mine on ebay and getting the PVR.

I have a BT Vision box and i can get Dave, also has a HDMI socket in the back, although i dont have a HD ready TV as yet, but i did hear the other day that BBC and ITV are going to offer HD channels free as part of the freeview package, so hopefully i'll be able to get them when i get my new TV

HD is the least of my worries, the only thing we have capable of outputting it is my monitor - our TV is a 21" CRT with a VCR built in ;)

As I said though, Dave on it's own is worth more than every other channel availalble FTA :/

I assume more channels will come along once any contractual obligations or rights issues are sorted out. Apparently Five will be coming onto Freesat on 18th November, so that's one channel being added shortly.

We've never bothered with satellite before, but with the offering of HD and a nice PVR coming out later this month it seems a good time to get it - it'll be better than recording onto DVDs from crappy analogue TV! The satellite dish is outside and the rest of the house is sorted, just need to wait for the PVR so we can get the final part of the installation sorted.

Is that freeview or FreeSAT built in?

If its FreeSAT then you would need a Sat dish for it to work properly I would have thought...

How much are freesat boxes typically? It might be better to get one of those here in Ireland rather than the shifty version of Sky that doesn't include all of the BBC channels.
