That he promised everything but has so far delivered very little - a neutered healthcare bill that does a great deal for the pharmaceutical industry...

He delivered health care - something dems have been trying to pass for the last 50 years +, and while it isnt perfect it can at least be expanded/altered and once it's been there a few years the Republicans won't dare try and repeal it - just like they are against socialised medicine but for medicare ( socialised medicine ).

He delivered a new START treaty, changed world opinion about america, and a bunch of other things.

What you have to remember about america though is it doesn't have the same system we have.

They have a lower house ( the house ) an upper house ( the senate ) as a legislature - the president heads the executive. It has you know - checks and balances. They are inherently designed to slow the pace of change and prohibit governments - even with majorities in all sections of elected government - from having a tyranny of the majority.

In the senate - any legislation can be blocked by filibuster unless you have 60 votes.

You can see that even in a very small time frame the use ( and many would call the abuse ) of the filibuster has risen dramatically.

It's a lot harder to judge presidents than it is PMs because they have to work with other bodies - and not dictate. ( Perhaps a point in favour of our new government after all ).

/lobs "offence" grenade

Britain must not be a country where our children grow up so used to their liberty being infringed that they accept it without question

Like so many on this board who, simply because of their youth, suck governmental and corporate man fat down like it's the creamy goodness of the gods rather than the congealing aids-ridden sick that it is.

You know who you are

(Or probably, you don't)

Judge them by their actions not their words.

Edit - look at Obama...

Yup. Been saying Obama's just a black George Bush for ages.

It doesn't matter what politicians say. It only matters what they do :)

This is the top, primary, A1 reason I voted Conservative. All other considerations were secondary. To hear the leader of the LibDems as Deputy Prime Minister make this speech warms my heart and puts a HUGE smile on my face. No matter how Labour tried to dress it up, Joe Public wasn't going to accept ID cards.

BigG, repeal of Section 44, or at least having it amended is almost certain.
And, we will, of course introduce safeguards to prevent the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation.

Yep. But not a repeal of them.

I'm currently thinking "Obama" but I hope I'm wrong :(

I don't think they will repeal them, but if they simply curb their use and enforce how they should be used it will make a massive change. If we the public are to choose which laws we want gone, then maybe it's time to make a massive noise about section 44?

I don't think you'll find it vanish no matter how many soundbites are used....although it will be put back in to its box.

I heard about the ID cards being scrubbed - very good news. Horrible, horrible idea when you have to prove you are innocent. Surely that is the cornerstone of British justice?

And where did all those mongs come from who consistently exclaimed "But if you're innocent you've nothing to hide!" Way to miss the point buddy.

id cards are great in principle but there would be so much cost and security holes that it undermines the idea in the real world, sadly. a mandatory, uniform id system is probably worth having when we can overcome the various problems we face with one today.

So true. It's refreshing to hear that our Government is wanting to restore our civil liberties instead of constantly eroding them.

I just hope they follow through on all of this.

They take this sky fairy nonsense waaaay to seriously. Have they not seen The life of Brian? Maybe they should make a new one based on Mohammed?

Not sure what is worse from people thinking that meaning has no place at all, people living by such sayings or people making very bad comparisons :p

It's a perfectly valid comparison, with the digital economy bill we have given the government powers over what websites we can browse.

On a serious note for this "great repeal" the ability of the public to suggest what laws we'd like repealed is nothing more than a chancer's PR-event :(

That is a very thin comparison, either way you are asking for trouble doing what FB did.

Wasn't it just one user?

Either way, good. IMHO muslims need to get used to having the piss taken out of them in this new globalised world. Everyone else gets lambasted to fuckery and they need to learn to live with it...

Well what they'be proves they don't and won't.

I'm no fan of any religion but I don't out to purposely offend them either.
