Vista/7/8 have all been fine,
There are times when I've wanted some decent voice control for windows, eg opening files from wonky directories that take ages to nav to.

Vista was the move to 64bit, and it was mostly vendors who were lazy/didnt want to provide new drivers for old products.
7 basically was vista SP1 and 8 was a decent step forward in performance, albeit with a shitty default interface ( which you can remove in <1minute by installing any of the available shells ).

tldr too popular to whine, stuff was fine.

I didn't get the hatred for Vista - it was fine after SP2, much like everyone's beloved XP.

8 was/is garbage even after all the half changes so no wonder uptake has been so disastrously low.

Was going to upgrade to 10 regardless but will leave it a few months before upgrading. Cool that it's free.

I like 7 really don't like the panel stuff in 8. So where I have to use it on my work laptop I stick to the old interface as much as possible. I just hope there is that option in ten.

I use 7 here at home and 8.1 on the office lappy. I love 7 and even though i have the update on this pc, I have never installed it.

I get on fine with 8.1 too, I have the start screen stripped back to only what I need and its good for getting around quickly, and I use the taskbar for everything else

I'll deffo update the laptop to 10

Vista was shite.
Leaving XP was saddening, but win7 came and I still prefer it to win 8.
I love looking forward to new editions, hopefully 10 will be win 7 with some better things

afaik "free" in this case means "free for the first year", after which you have to sub up. I own three windows licenses: two 7 pro's and 1 8.1 home. I am tempted to update a 7 pro laptop to this just to see how it is.

Ah missed that. They going sub for their os?

Or after the first year of distribution they start charging for new installs etc?

If it's sub. I am going to run win 7 into the ground before I abandon windows. I don't want to be part of a revenue stream product.

Think it's similar to the 8 update path, early adopters get it cheaper (free this time) if you don't grab it whilst it's there then you get to pay up.

Cool. I don't want it going the office 365 route. Seemed to be what tdc was suggesting

hmm things are conflicting. Techradar says : Microsoft's Terry Myerson announced that Windows 10 will be free for Windows 8.1 users for its first year.
source: http://www.techradar.com/news/softw...-release-date-price-news-and-features-1029245

Computerworld has another -imo fairly confusing- article: http://www.computerworld.com/articl...on-who-gets-a-free-upgrade-to-windows-10.html

What I gather from things is that MS really, really, really wants you to use their product, to the point where they will give it to you for free, like that guy behind the supermarket.

Yeah I'm not 100% but I don't see Microsoft going that route, Apple doesn't go that way and they're the Kings of asking for money for nothing. Frankly if Microsoft went that way they could get to feck because steam runs well on Linux now.

They did it with Vista too. I bought a work laptop with Vista on it and had an option to upgrade to 7 for free before a certain date

I'll get it, may wait a week or two before I do though just to make sure there are no major fuck ups with the release.

Will need clarification on the pay thing before deciding

You can upgrade free for the first year. If you decide to upgrade after that first year then they'll make you pay to upgrade.

Microsoft really, really, *really* needs Win10 to be a very well adopted O/S for their larger strategy to work. That's why they're effectively giving it away for free for 12 months. Why have Windows 7 and 8 out there when they want all the application developers to be developing for a single unified platform?

I'll be updating all my O/S's to 10 tbh. 8/8.1 has been great for me with classicshell installed to handle the start-menu functions. Windows 10 has a built-in start menu so as far as I'm concerned it's a free sparkly OS upgrade and a no-brainer.

I'm running the test build in a VM at the moment. Certainly some great improvements over 8 and 8.1, especially in the way the modern ui apps are integrated in the desktop. Some things that still annoy me about it though, lots of silly little things, some of which can be changed back, but I really wish they'd stop trying to ram the microsoft account signin down people's throats. offer it as a choice, fine, but if someone chooses a local account, just respect that and stop saying signing in to stuff individually is not recommended...
anyway, rant aside, it's moving in the right direction for fixing some of 8's annoyances, but for me at least, still not close enough to 7 for my liking.

They can kiss my ring if they think I will be paying a sub for it. Happy to pay a reasonable one off fee but if they want a sub I will just DL a rip and be done with it.

Nah - not a sub - just a one-off fee. A fee that you don't have to pay if you upgrade in year 1.

The upgrade to Windows 8 from 7 was £28 in the first year then it went to full price. They're just waiving that fee so they get lots of early adopters.

So what's the good stuff in 10 over 7. And do you have to mod it to get rid of the stupid interface for touch screens

From what I have read, I think it detects if you are using a touch screen and alters the interface to suite.
I don't think it ill need modding.

I've been running Win 10 on my home PC since the tech preview came out.

Not had to many issues with it, most games/programs work ok. BF4 has some issues intermittently where it decides it wont launch, but...EA.

In other games its speedy and responsive. I think i got a 10-15 average frame boost in Arma3 going from W7 to W10, was quite a while ago so i can't recall perfectly.

NVIDIA Shadowplay has a couple of issues in W10 with a couple of games, a reboot solves it each time but, meh annoying.

I use W8.1 at work so its not a huge move for me. I do like the new startmenu more than the 8.1 start screen.

I'm using VMware player 6.0.4, went through straight away, well, little bit slow as I didn't have enough ssd space for it, but other than that going fine.
