Free Ripping?

Anyone know of a good, free, downloadable programme that rips CDs to MP3s? I was using mp3toCDmaker but it was limited to 20 tries.

b4 any1 asks I dont want it 2 do illegal stuff . . like let scabby poor people get it off me for free

I've used CDex for ages, though couldn't get the current Doves single to rip right so gave EAC a go.
EAC is very good, though CDex strips it for speed. Will do straight into MP3 rather than relying on the external Lame exe.

The version of lame is old in CDex 1.3 though if that is a concern to anyone. 1.4 has been due forever.

Freerip MP3 is good. Contains an annoying advert, but it's the only program I know which lets you rip to .ogg files.

Regardless of how much better ogg is anyway, no way can I be bothered re-ripping my entire collection

ogg's apparently 40-50% smaller than MP3 with superior quality sound, from what I've read

I'm sure you'll get programs that will redo your mp3's in batch ste

.ogg does give better quality for the file size, but the size is about equivalent to 192kbit mp3's with Freerip, so it's a bit of an increase if you have 128kbit mp3's. However, the sound quality is amazing when you compare the two.

Although it's useless for anyone wanting to use it with a portable player at the moment.
All being well there should be firmware updates for most kit when the OGG standard is made official. (Still only on RC stage at the moment).

192kbps mp3 recorded correctly will do me just fine.
