Question Free backup software...

...preferably open-source (as I'm of that bent, though I'm not sure why)

Would like to automate a few things without having to write xcopy scripts myself. What do you guys use?

I'm using Handy Backup 6.3 - Data Backup to DVD, CD, FTP, Network, Online. Enterprise Backup Software - love it, back up to ftp and my NAS pretty easily and reliably. Its not free but let me know if you want a copy....

Some guys in work are using Free backup software for Windows - GFI Backup Home Edition and say it works just as good

I generally use softpedia to find programs these days, it recommends

Download FBackup 4.2.156 - It protects your important data by backing it up automatically to any USB/Firewire device, local or network location. - Softpedia

I've not tried it myself however.

I'm using rsync here: rsync download (you may want to look at the cwRsync packages for Win32), nightly backup to off site host and vice-versa - so far so good...

I'd do off-site but it'd take about a year on Virgin Media to do the initial backup, and then several days for incrementals

Just tried this and I have to say I'm really impressed. Most backup software I've dealt with has been gash but that's really solid. Freeware and 8mb too, lovely.
