Got the DVD, Vai is aging badly though and his hands are slowing down a little too.

thats what was so amazing about jimi hendrix, you can have the same song by him and by satch+vai+petrucci, all of them amazing guitarists in their own regard, but even with 3 great guitarists playing jimi makes the song sound so much more full on his own.
coupled with the way he acted on stage when playing that song, you just dont beat it with 3 men shredding the shit out of the solo.
i mean, he was influential, to all of the guitarists appearing at G3, so if they want to pay tribute to him, why not show more of the fields that he was influential in, rather than showing the differences between themselves and hendrix.

I agree with that in many ways but I think Nuno Bettencourt could certainly play it with more heart than any of the three in the video. It wouldn't be as quick or as clinical but then neither was Jimi, his sound was raw and dirty with a heapload of sexiness thrown in.

exactly, when you play jimi you have to actually be sloppy on purpose, not mute strings etc, dirtyness with loads of fuzz thrown in > clinical distortion of shredders!

Don't confuse being innovative with being a great player, they are very different. Techinically Jimi wasn't brilliant but he created a sound all of his own that will influence rock music for at least another 100 years. Vai is an unbelieveably gift player, his is very innovative but his music is very much a niche. In that respect Vai is much like a virtuoso musician. Jimi could not be classed as such because his playing skills were nowhere near as polished. What he did have is a great ear for new sounds and the ability to put a whole lot of passion into his playing which whilst sounding dirty and even messy at times was totally original, something even Vai cannot claim to be.
