The main problem I find with fox-hunting is you have to go into the countryside to do it. It smells out there, and it's full of toffs on horses. At least cat-microwaving can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Another fan of the sport. Can I just ask where you get your cats from?

On a side note, I couldn't give a damn whether or not fox hunting with hounds is banned. But the fact is that it's still happening, and I doubt anyone's going to bother stopping it. Hell, I haven't heard of Rynnor's stunning tales standing infront of fox hunters in the middle of a hunt bringing the whole event to a close, but then he's got to tell everyone how inhumane it is.. And the effort.. Much less effort to visit a forum..

I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to have more sympathy for another mammal than a fish.

The thin end of the wedge arguements are also spurious - they require a certain level of paranoia. In truth laws generally reflect the opinion of the majority.

It would be difficult to argue that fox hunting was ever more than a very minority pastime that was pretty unpopular - to compare that to a sport like fishing where over a million people regularly go and that doesnt have a bad reputation with the majority and then suggest it is now in imminent danger of being banned is to stretch credibility...

Its like saying they've banned the sale of heroin so cigarettes will be next.

Here you go Throd -quoting myself because the same weak Countryside Alliance justifications keep coming round and round.

Anyway the next target would have been shooting but then we decided we might need people who can shoot birds on the wing to protect us all from bird flu ;)

Tell you what - you can have hunting back if you'll legalise Chav Arena combats featuring such greats as Chav v Lions, Chav v machine gun and chav v chav...

What would be the point - if what they are doing is within the law then its a quick way of getting arrested for disruption.

The focus should be on changing the law so its enforceable - currently its pathetic.

It IS the thin end of the wedge. It is. I cant make you believe that, so you'll have to wait and see.
Not long in fact. There is a new airgun law coming out in the very near future. The government want to control us all.
Actually no, thats not fair. They're not that stupid or power-crazed. They know they cant control us all. So, they settle for the 85% or so who agree to play the game by the rules. Car tax, car registration, gun licences etc etc. They beat the living fucking daylight out of us. They know the remaining 15% get away with murder, but they dont let that bother them, they can just carry on. After all, criminals have rights too ffs tbh !!
You're welcome to the chav arena though, I think its called Crawley high street any friday or saturday 9pm onwards :D

Heh - I find myself agreeing with you on this!!! The problem as I see it is that kids dont seem to learn all the unwritten rules like not shooting each other. So governments who think its too politically dangerous to get tough on crap parents pass a lot of laws that those they are aimed at will largely ignore...

Normal people get caught in the middle - its on the same lines that McDonalds have to put signs saying 'Coffee may be hot' out ;P

Chav national service for teh win! Hopefully somewhere nice n dangerous like Iraq!

Just as an example, its ALREADY illegal to shoot a passer-by with an airgun. Obvious yes? So do they enforce that? No. They bring out another law make it more difficult to purchase airguns. How will that effect the kind of scumbag who would shoot someone with one? Not at all. hes not gonig to spend loads of money on one anyway, he will have found it/nicked it/ got it off his brother /whatever.
How will it effect the law abiding people who will spend £500+ on an air rifle? It will effect them a lot because they have to travel further to go to a registered firearms dealer. The chav just carries on shooting at people.
If Im out shooting my shotgun, legitimately, and some passerby sees me and rings the police, they have to send an armed response unit, even though its obvious who I am.
This country is fucking mental :(

not the thin end of the wedge ? My arse it aint. This is a police fucking state :/

Not really. A shotgun can kill you just as readily as a rifle or a handgun so it doesn't make sense for the rules to be different. The only worrying part (imho) is the phrase, 'intemperate or unsound habits'. Once again, like so much of recent legislation (anti-terror laws, so-called 'religious hatred' laws) its a totally subjective judgement in the hands of people (politicians, lawyers, certain chief constables) who routinely show they couldn't find their arse with both hands.

Nonsense mate. A bread knife can kill you ffs A shotgun has a limited range, and they are widely used for sport, whereas rifles , even .22LR have an effective range of hundreds and hundreds of yards. Also if you fire a rifle up into the air the bullet is still just as effective when it comes down halfa mile away, whereas shotgun pellets could land on you half a mile away and not scratch.
You see? With respect its a little knowledge is a dangerous thing time again innit? And who has the least knowledge , and the most power? Yeah its the government ...

I'd trust the scrawled words of a psychotic chimp before I put my faith in anything written in the Daily Mail.

Semantics. A handgun has limited range too, and be honest, how many gun crimes are committed at long range? I'd guess most gun crimes are committed within 10ft of the victim. While I'm a big believer that "guns don't kill people, people do", I don't really have a problem with very strict gun control either. Britain isn't America, it doesn't have much of a great outdoors so hunting with guns wasn't ever going to be a maintream pursuit, we don't have a tradition of gun ownership, or frankly, much of a need.

In the great and growing catalogue of nanny-state iniquities, I don't think gun control is the place to fight the battle tbh.

You got it there. Its not mainstream, so dont worry about it.
Just ignore it, like I did fox hunting. Then when its the turn of fishing, we'll say dont worry, I dont go fishing, who cares.
What then? How about music with subversive lyrics? How about food with too much sugar in it? Or salt? How about motorbikes? How about cars that use too much fuel?
How about they all fuck off.

You're misinterpreting. I didn't say don't worry about it because "it's not mainstream", but because compared to other iniquities you've got a snowball's chance in Hell of winning.

NB. I'm not worried about fishing getting banned, because it won't happen. Fox hunting was a vote winner for Labour because their constituency is predominately urban and the reality was that it had nothing to do with saving poor foxy-loxey and everything to do with class. Fishing cuts right across class and the urban/country divide. The animal rights nuts can wave their fists all they like but they won't get any mainstream political party to back them as a policy issue because politicians don't give a shit about issues, they just care about power.

If I can get a shotgun license then there must be something wrong with the system - I told em it was for my cannon as well...

The explosives license wasnt much tougher...
