Forum "tags" compatability.

I'm updating my website and I'm upgrading my forums to use a PHP/MySQL system rather than the old Perl/Text file approach.
There's no problem with the technology, or converting the old board accross however, something puzzles me.

It does, like all boards, have smily images built in, but the codes it uses are different.
For instance, is obtained by typing ::) instead.

Does anyone know if there is an authority on which way of defining smilies is the "standard" so as not to confuse new users?

The vB way of having colans eitrher side of a word has sort of become the standard, merely because of the amount of forums running vB.

It really doesn't matter. Do you use YaBB?

Yeah, running the old YaBB Gold release on Perl at the moment.
Going to upgrade to PHP/MySQL YaBBSE soon though. - not least because I can convert all the old threads!

Never had any problems with it, and the MOD community around it is very cool. But as it's going to be PHP I can hack around with it myself and have it less confusing. I agree about the :stuff: - it certainly seems that way.

Thanks.
