We are aware that the performance/reliability of the forums have been a little below what you would expect from FreddysHouse, steps are being taken to improve this.

Hopefully new systems should be brought online tomorrow evening to spread the load across.

Apologies for the piss poor experience thus far enjoyed

Beta testers wanted...

Evening

I have brought up a load balancer at http://193.138.95.194:81

Please test it out and post comments on this thread.

NOTE:

Certain forum images will be broken until I have restarted a certain webserver. DO NOT post about broken images until I have edited this message to tell you that the server has been restarted.

EDIT: Webserver has been restarted so images like smilies should now work.

Balancer seems quite nice from the minute or so of browsing it.

I've been away for a couple of days, and things are much better.:)

Much, much nicer - most of the DAoC people are here because it's patch day for the latest expansion, and the "normal" site is dog slow.

I promise I won't tell them! :D

Yep, working smooth here. Main URL is very slow, no doubt for the above reasons.

The whole thing is unbelievably slow right at this moment.

Just checked the load balancing server and it seems a lot quicker than the normal one. Might just be me imagining it though!

Bugger, nasty firewall blocks me out of the load balancer. Damn you port 81!

Just out of interest, how much bandwidth does FH burn a month?

Once I sort out the stats I will let you know but I can tell you the SQL server is sending 5MB/sec 24x7 minimum.

DAoC patch days use about the same amount of bandwidth a month with out a daoc patch day.

Maybe I don't want to know, it'll make me feel guilty :(

It balances the load.

(I have no idea, although it's probably something to do with spreading the pain of 4k spammers across multiple servers. I think.)

Nice way of putting it bluntly. :)

And aye, a load balancer is like a mirror i think, works int he same way, spreads the forums over more than 1 server, i think.

My limited understanding/explaining skills seem to make me believe that:

Load balancer = front box for multiple servers which directs traffic requests equally amongst the servers in order to balance out said traffic, i.e. although it appears as such FH isn't actually "one server" it's a combination working as one.

Ok,

This thread is now closed. An IP change is in the works.

If forums.freddyshouse.com resolves to .206 then you are now going thru a load balancer.

Have fun.
