Peak time there were always <20 Mercs online, heck I think even in the ancient days mercs were refused groups cause they didnt have a shield or plate. My old mind seems to remember.

Besides i remember getting 50 in patch 1.49 with sycho, the patch we got df in august 2002 or september somewhere there, damn nearly 2 years ago already time sure flies

I think the merc population will never be real high, i saw twice as many infs online as mercs this week a few times, i just hope the former savages from another server or former infs do not roll shitloads of HO mercs that are like some infs at the moment, never seen til lv50 Oo

There were quite a few effective release day mercs back in the day, Veralith (still one of the highest RR mercs on server) who still plays now, Jubei (RR5ish?), Hendrick though he was famous for being a weaponcrafting loony more than a merc

Mercs really only started to shine when /assist, endregain, and light-tank abilites were introduced, before then they were loathed in PvE as most didnt understand they wernt for holding agro (still loathe mercs who dont know how to play in PvE now as a cleric tbh).

Now we see a new high str based race, +str cap items from ToA, an improved crush line (with stun on a followup to an anytimer), and its no wonder we are seeing HO crush mercs being rolled.

I personally dont like either of the new alb races, annoying fish ppl and 'clever' ogres (oxymoron imo). I liked alb when it was "normal people" races and all these wierd small/huge/ugly people were kept away ! (racalist :x)

If anyone rolls some butt ugly female HO crush merc and starts RvRing with it they need shooting, tbh, bad enough with butt ugly female Valkyns/Trolls/Firbes without more to make people heave. I can understand straight people rolling attractive female toons, but what on earth they are doing with those beasts is beyond even my warped queer mind.

Morale of the story: kill all half ogres, especially female ones. And blame delket for being stupid enough to mate with them in the first place.

Mercenaries are not an overpopulated class by far. Mercenaries and Theurgists are the most "hard-to-get" classes normally for me in my RvR groups when I have to look for one.

Whether you are powerlevelled or spent 120 days /played levelling your Mercenary is irrelevant to how you will perform. Some people are good in RvR, while some are not. Most people can learn if they are willing to take advice. However, "I'm level 47, don't tell me how to play my class" or "I RvR'ed this char to RR5 so I know everything"" are not uncommon attitudes to meet if you try to offer some advice.

Saying that Melee-groups are mindless assist-trains doesnt really sound right, nor is that my impression after playing in them. Why is there such a big difference in how they perform if it doesn't require any skill or knowledge?

And finally, I would understand it if Faderullan looked down on me for rolling a merc in the way certain people in thread seem to do. After all, I'm just basking in his glory after he's demonstrated the strengths of the Mercenary-groups. Anyone but Faderullan really don't have anything to say about that.

And aside from that, if you're rolling a Mercenary, why not choose the best race?

Agree completely, though I have noticed in PvE (whilst doing MLs with all sorts) a handful of mercs who think its their job to tank mobs Oo, this is generalisation and stereotypical and hence wrong, yes, as there are also a lot of mercs who know exactly what to do in PvE

Thats just my personal opinion of /assist in RvR. It requires one skilled character who knows what targets when to go for, a skilled interupted (theurg, mincer, whatever) and then some people to hammer /assist /stick and some styles. Not trying to make out that its all mindless, and you are right, there are a lot of RvR groups who even do this assist train lark poorly, so yea, there are some people skilled at it, just the whole assist lark isnt my cup of tea

As a reply on the ugglyness of HO, lets compair the HO, FB, and Troll.

Lets face it, a troll with black chain armor and an axe larger than an avalionian is sceary, not that preaty to look at, but sceary.
A FB with a spear 1.5 times hes own hight is not that sceary, but hey, its not uggly either.
A HO, with a polearm, will be good in RvR, it will paralyse your oponent with laughter, we will laugh so hard he cant punch the keys on hes keyboard! :touch:
