Yo Commandment. Wot you trying to do - remove all the porn you been downloading? :touch: .

Number of ways to format but these days with XP and so on when you install the operating system it gives you the option of formatting. Funny thing though if you want to get a bit more technical there are levels of formatting. You can do a quick format which is over and done in seconds using a dos command. Or you can do a Full Format which is slower but more thorough or you can do a 'deep' format - eh I taking a stab at that name cos it been ages since I done did it. Deep format ( or wotever it is called ) removes everything totally to the extent that the police can't find anything after :) . Maybe you require that kind of format?

To make it all easy for yourself m8 do you know the make of your hard drive? If you do visit their website because there is nothing as good as the hard drive utilities that are available off the makers websites. A breeze to use and you won't be scratching your head for hours. If you get stuck well I can run you through a simple format proceedure but head for the makers website first if I were you.

Anyways, more on topic , i jsut got a format cd with the pc when i got it, but i dont rely use it that much , main thing to speed up pc imo , would to defrag your hardrive often and if duel logging run them out of two seperate folders (herd its easier for windows to cashe it or summit like that)
Now log out of pyrd and duo with meh ;<

main prob these days, is after a format+re-instal of windows, yer machine th emoment it goes online is bombarded by spyware and viruses.

above all else THE MOMENT you have windows installed and online, enable windows firewall and head straight for windows update site, and get ALL the critical updates before you so much as read yer email. after several reboots and gettin all them installed, find yerself a good spyware remover, and virus scanner. Scan to make sure yer pc is clean, then reboot, and scan again. if it finds somethin on second scan, remove the harmful stuff, rebooot, and scan again...repeat etc.

also, before re-install, worth checkin your alt+ctrl+del task manager, and lookin at the process list for things that shouldnt be there. my fave of late is a proccess called "jusched" tends to appear on alot of peeps machines, uses like 99% of resources and ofc lags daoc to shit...end task it after boot up and that pretty much solves that. if you find anything particulary dodgy, you can botot start menu--->run, and type in "msconfig", once yer done that go to last tab and you can untick a number of things that start up at boot time "jusched" included.

Ignore above DO NOT install windows without doing the following:

1) Download the lastest service pack and put it on a cd/zip disk & virus guard + firewall if necessary
2) Pull out network/modem cable
3) Insert the windows xp setup cd into drive
4) When the post test (when it checks ram etc) comes up press the key it says to enter the BIOS
5) Set the first boot device to cd rom, it will be in there somewhere just need to look around a bit varies from bios to bios
6) save changes and reboot
7) setup will now boot from the cd
8) go through setup, its step by step and fairly simple. If in doubt select typical settings
9) Make sure network cable is out/modem not connected to the phone line
10) Last check network/modem cable isnt connected
11) After couple reboots install the latest service pack from youre cd
12) Install a virus guard
13) Install a firewall
14) Reconnect cable to have internet access
15) Set virus guard and windows update going
16) Sit happily with a cup of coco wondering how much you pwn cus of youre achievement

the alternative if available to you is sometimes there is a "system restore" available for your computer where the manufacturer has given you a disc that restores the information from a backup to exactly what it was when you bought the computer. This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer

how are you formatting the computer? :)
formatting it means you completely wipe the harddrive of information so you wont even have windows on it,
what operating system are you using? (windows 200, windows xp, windows xp pro etc.)
if your unsure
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpwindowsinstall/indexfullpage.htm
has screenies of each step
instead of leave current system intact, choose format partition using NTFS

formatting the computer WIPES ALL INFORMATION ON IT, put it in caps to emphasise the point before you do something you will regret

Oops - wot you been doing? Yah can't format half an hard drive m8y unless you have a number of partitions - c- d - e etc.

Anyways we all have to learn. Arm yourself with XP CD - any driver disk that is related to stuff inside your computer cos it sounds like yu gonna have to run a full reinstall - which is what I thought you were going to do in the first place. Didn't see any harm in you finding out about hard drive utilities because they are quite interesting.

If the puter is working well leave it but if it ain't reinstall everything making sure you have all the necessary drivers - make damn sure else you could make sum bit of kit defunct. Triple check the modem is going to work as this can be used to download any missing driver afterwards.

Like everyone says though you deff need a damn good firewall - I wouldn't rely on the windows one - get a free one such as Zone Alarm. Also get a free virus scanner from Avast or somewhere. Number of other things you need to do to such as disabling windows messenger - not the one you get on the taskbar. Can't beat a backup once everything has been scanned for any nasties and a program such as Norton Ghost can burn your hard drive to a bootable DVD. Probably better programs out there though for this as I have had a few backups fail to boot.

Anyways have fun. By the way I take no responsbility for your actions from the stuff I have posted above. Be it on your own head. Good disclaimer that.

Well, being you I'd first prepare proper installation cd of you windows xp - with all servicepacks and patches included...

you will need following:
XP installation CD
empty CD-R(W) disc (preferably RW)
ISO Buster (software)
Nero Burning Rom (software, version 5+)

this is how to do it:

1. Copy all files from your XP CD to your harddisc folder - let's say C:\XP-CD (it has to be folder in root directory of volume)
2. Get all the servicepacks and patches (for newest version of windows get SP2 servicepack and all patches marked as SP3, check for proper language version!) - put them in folder C:\XP-SP
3. Over Start->Run (or other console terminal) run following command: C:\XP-SP\<name of file> -s:C:\XP-CD (-s works with servicepack, not sure if patches don't have different command, if so you'll get help printed in terminal window... some of patches also can't be installed to installation disc, but it's not much of them)... use this procedure first for SP2 and then for other patches (all of them)
4. In case you cba with re-activation of Windows after every installation, copy C:\Windows\System32\wpa.dbl to the C:\XP-CD\<your folder>... after installation just copy that back so you don't have to activate Windows with M$ Idiotic Activation System (c)
5. Run ISOBuster. On the left side click on Bootable CD (you need your XP CD in CD-ROM drive). On the right side, click on file Microsoft Corporation.img. Use feature Extract Microsoft Corporation.img ... Save it to C:\XP-CD\ for later using and quit the ISOBuster
6. Run Nero. Create new compilation of CD-ROM (Boot). On page Boot, check Image File and select that one saved in step 5. Check Enable Expert Settings and set it for no emulation and 4 loaded sectors (instead of default 1).
7. On page Label name your new CD (something like WinXP-SP2 or whatever you like). Click on 'New'. Now drag& drop whole content of C:\XP-CD folder to your new compilation (not the XP-CD folder itself, just everything what's inside).
8. And now just burn it. After doing this you have bootable installation CD with SP2 and all available security patches etc...

Just to note it might be wise to put on the CD also new folder with drivers, where you download all the newest drivers for your motherboard, graphic card, sound card, network etc. etc...
As you might be doing this quite often, being you I'd use CD-RW (or DVD+-RW disc) so you can just apply new patches and drivers and re-burn fresh compilation.

Considering your missing dll or such a crap - I had one pc two weeks ago with same trouble, although it's HDD was totaly re-formated... After a bit of testing I discovered hardware failure on motherboard southbridge... hope it's not your case...

That process is related to the java virtual machine (JVM) automatic updater. Anyone using any Java VM based software ( The Azuerus bittorrent client is a very common example ) on their PC will likely have this process running. An alternative way to turn it off is to try going to control Panel->Java Plug In->Update tab then uncheck "Check for Updates Automatically".
