Another good point. It would be cheaper and easier to terraform the inhospitable places of the Earth than it would be to build an atmosphere on another planet.

LMAO :D

Regarding the thread i'm pretty sure they did go to the moon and the camera was mounted on the side of their pod so they could land easier. (it was just useful for the speech bit anyhow)

But even if they didn't then, we probably could now, and we've sent a radio controlled car to Mars so what more could anyone possibly want??

Space is good, Space is fun, but it's just too big to worry about at the moment when we have things like ... terrorism, religon(ism), racism, wars, violence and brussel sprouts.

;) using the word wrong SomeGuy earth = terra so you cant terraform earth hehe ;)
funny mellow but have you noticed a commen thing in the probs
brussels sprouts are ok as long as you take the smaller ones caus when they grow older they get bitter and the other problems hmmm often started by grumpy old men :) hmmm think i have found another prob ageism

The moon is a deeply dull rock in space. Which is why we haven't gone back.

Why people care for space is entirely beyond me, we've hardly touched the surface (pardon the pun) of the ocean - lets look there first ok? (where there is life we haven't discovered/know enough about)

Look at inhospitable planets is a thoroughly pointless task, I don't care about some rock thats made of ice that couldn't be a habitat for any sort of life. I'm quite content making this one inhospitable.

I have a certificate from Lunn Poly that says I have a space reserved on the first commercial flights to the moon that they do. Or something. But having since discovered a fear of conventional planes, getting into a spacecraft (especially when I'm 128) is something I can't see me doing. If anyone fancies swopping their name by deed pole to mine, I'll trade my certificate for some sweeties, and then the whole fake thing can be settled by a barryworld member.

i bid a mars bar and some skittles for the flight to the moon!

no wait, is it one way? in that case i bid a king size mars bar and a whole packet of skittles to send Someguy

The oceans boring, theres just weirdo things flapping their lips and mostly transparent, no culture nothing :/

Was I the only person who fell asleep during Blue Planet?

Space on the other hand, wow. :)

If the ocean is boring then space must surely be super-boring...for me I love both but I don't believe going to the moon will do JS.

nah the moon is boring, thats the main reason why it is so close;)
by the way a one way ticket? raises a question what would you bring with you if it was? (a spacesuit duh and basic provisions  ) what else 3 things no more
lets hear something interesting

if we gave him one of those star trek ships with just enough fuel to get there we'd be fine. I'll go look in the shed.

Why would we want to go to the moon?

Ok first off these pictures do make you think but I think they are taking too much of a simplistic view. Mr B’s points in the previous post point out all the facts the website fails to make. The only one that is odd is the one taken at a decline a bit above head height of the astronaut, as it couldn’t of been taken by the other astronaut unless he was in midair or by a camera attached to the craft.

As for why go to the moon… well for Humans to would be stupid. The amount of resources it would take to keep a human alive there for a prolonged period would make any trip there non-profitable, also what can a human do that a computer cant? If the computer gets into a situation its not programmed for it can just call for help.

The purpose of the moon in our future is created by 3 factors – it has a low level of gravity (compared to earth), has wide range of resources, and a small amount of water. Add all these 3 factors together and the moon is a perfect place to build stuff destined for space as you have the resources to build craft with and the fuel to power it. The only way we are ever going to launch manned missions to mars and beyond is by building the vehicle from the resources on the moon.

If you think all this seems fantasy well its already starting to happen, although its not the likes of America etc that are doing / planning it, it comes from 2 unlikely sources – private companies and China. Private companies are getting into it as they realise for a small investment of a the few million it costs to launch a series of probes the size of shoe boxes the returns in the long long term could be amazing. China is getting into it for 2 reasons – country pride and the potential returns. China stated recently that it intends to launch a manned mission to the moon with the intention of building a base within 10 years although how it intends to make the trip profitable is anyone’s guess.

As for the water moon (Europa) nice idea to visit there but it is all solid ice and well may think that’s a massive resource of water but it suffers one catastrophic failure how do you melt the stuff to make it useable :) Better place to visit for resources and interest is Io… as that moon appears to be in the same state our planet was in the beginning namely full of active volcano’s…

The moon has 1/10 of our gravity. It doesn't have any water what so ever which is why it was hard to believe that it could of been spun off from the Earth although the rock then proved that it had to come from the Earth. It's now widely believed that the moon was the result of a massive collision between a very young Earth and another smaller body, thus collision was so big that the Earth only just managed to survive and the moon was pure molten rock, hence no water crystals.

The Moon is important as a launch base but the first step is the Space Station, coming along nicely :)

ALso just to point out that after the first moon landing there were another 2 which looked for the moons origins.

There is a mission in the making for a robot to drill into Europa.

You keep using the term "profitable" when it's not necessary. To be quite frank the only reason why people decided to go there in the first place is because the human race is naturally curious about what we haven't seen. E.g. The Moon. That's why we go there, and if we manage to find anything useful then so be it, we'll nick it. :)

low grav a reason to go? sorry no, better places with less grav (lets not forget the rocks in orbit around earth) The water has not been proven but there have been indications that there is water molecules at the south pole in the craters (not in liquad form) The water molecules come from the asteroids etc hits in the past, the reason that it has not totaly vaperised is that it is in the shade side of the craters. They tried to prove it with the prospecter mision last year.
The main resource and if talking about resources is in all likelyhood helium 3 (a possible means to make fusion work)
But on the whole i think the space station is a much better staging ground for a mision to mars then the moon you would have to build too much and the costs would be too high and you would waste a good staging ground.
Private companies at the moment just do not have enough resources to be a viable competitor of NASA or ESA as for China they are willing thats for sure but they lack the experience and tech. Look at the 2 disasters china had last year. On the long run they will both be at the heart of space explotation. China offcourse only if they can keep it self together and without having a war or 2 ( 4 possible conflicts at the horizon)
Oh and melting the ice of europa there is a theory (cant remember where i read it) about turning saturn into a proto sun thereby melting the ice and in fact creating a mini solar system.
The moon being part of the earth (in the past) is just one theory and i believe that we just dont know enough of the whole thing to say this is the truth.

http://www.nasa.gov/ for all your fun facts :D

Turning Saturn into another smaller star ... yes yes. I can see that happening not. Any idea what the gravitational effects of another sun would have on the other planets orbits? no ... didn't think so. You talk arse. :p

A space station would be good, but I think most of you are thinking about sci fi films rather than the actual level of technology we have as far as space travel is concerned.

But it's the most likely theory at the moment and it's one that is being widely accepted.

lol hmmm to be honest and this aint my theory but the mass wouldn't change so the grav wouldn't change. cant imagine how you would increase the mass off saturn? hehe or imagine the effects of that lol for the rest well true Mellow but I dont think humanity aint that far away if we would put our minds too it but then again lol we could have a paradise on earth if only if we would.

its quite ironic actually.

They say that the best way to heat up a planet and give it an atmosphere therefore creating life would be to nuke it. A destructive power actually helping. Unfortunately nuking the moon would probably knock it out of orbit.

I heard that the mass of the moon was roughly equal to the mass of the Pacific Ocean. Whheeee, crash, yoink! Moon.

Sorted.
