Football - Video aids

I watched a replay of the super bowl and it seems with the right ref that video aids could work. And if you had a 5th official always reviewing key moments this could be a quicker process than how the yanks do it.

My question is would you like to see it? and if yes what would you like to be appealable and what not?

I would like to see each team getting 2 appeals in a game and if you are found to be right you do not use the appeal.

I think you should be able to appeal.
Goal Line action (did the ball cross was it cleared)
Penalty (if the ref dose not give it you can appeal, if he did and you think it was simulation you can appeal)
Violence (if you see a player hit another behind the refs back appeal)

I do not think Off Side should be included as this could really slow down the game too much

What are your thoughs what would you include or not include.

agree with most of what you said, apart from off-side, if theres a 5th official reviewing things surely wouldnt be that hard to set up some program that can watch and alert said official if a player is offside, he can then inform the ref who could stop the game

edit: on second thoughts that might be problematic with distinguishing between players (maybe make them wear chips so it can always tell where on the pitch they are! )

For offside i was thinking it might stop the game to often and if your in the right you are still left with your 2 appeals. So it could stop the game every 5 minutes and it might be too much too soon

Offsides are a difficult one, when do you decide to stop the game? after the goal or the miss? or before it gets that far?

Linesmen just need to do what ha been asked if have a little doubt whether or not he is offside give the advantage to the forward. It makes the game more exciting while keeps a check on peoole blatantly standing on the goal line all game.

Linesmen are to quick to judge, even with this unless you see daylight rule they are still getting it wrong.

I would be for the replays like nfl or rubgy for major incidents. For the people that say it wastes time, generally after a major incident they waste about 5 minutes trying to calm down the innocent party. So it would actually save time.

This would then let the ref concentrate on the rest of the game and because of that he would gain more respect. It seems to be the same ref's making the same decisions though.

We tried this in Denmark once and it was terrible.. Frustrating to see the other teams coach appeal for something to be looked through and the game stopping every now and then with absolutely no play action!

The two times BIF used their appeals were to look penalties through and both times the ref decided that "the ruling on the play stands!", which really sucked as it would mean several minutes of stopping and no playing!

Believe in the ref and his two sidekicks to do a good job.. Most of the time they are right anyway

Thats why i think only getting 2 appeals a game and having a 5th ref would be essential. The speed sky get these replays on our tvs are amazing you have normally seen it 5 times befor the team kick back off. So the 5th ref could have watched the key moment and had his mind made up befor the ref asks him.

Another potential problem i can see would be appeals used to stop a teams momentum. So if it happens what you can use them for would have to be highly policed

I think it should only apply to offsides when theres a goal, and either the flag came up late, or the denders appeal afterwards, other wise it will just slow down the game too much. It is about time it was propperly introduced, although the reason Zidane got sent off in the World Cup was because the 5th official saw what he did on a video replay, which is why there was such a big pause between the game being stopped and the card.

Personally i think how they handle the offside rule is ok atm. In the majority of cases if the ball's played forward and the striker or whoever is closer to the goal than the last defender by enough to deem it offside, it's called almost straight away. Where you've got a crowd of players around the penalty box or whatever, it takes more time to establish, so inevitably they can't instantly call it.

I'd say they need the goal line technology if nothing else is implemented, the Man U - Portsmouth game in the FA Cup showed that Vidic clearly scored (think there was another incident at that end too?) and it was deemed not to cross the line (oh not forgetting Roy Carroll's blunder a while back ).

Violence outside of the ref's field of vision could be dealt with better at times, although the linesmen generally seem to see what's happening anyway, they don't seem to do much else other than flag for offside and run up and down the pitch

Reminds me of when I used to work with Flash and other graphics programs a lot. Some had a "visual aids" menu... always made me cringe a bit.
