Example:

Police to investigate Sol Campbell taunts

For 60 grand a week I could put up with pretty much anything the crowd had to shout at me. If it wasn't for the fact that Sol's got previous for being a massive cry-baby then it wouldn't even get taken seriously.

Poor Sol :fluffle:

No. Actually pretty fucking stinking rich Sol.

Anyone here go to football semi-regularly? Is it not funnier than a trip to a comedy-club? Am I a massive insensitive twat? (Well, yes, but...)

I think it's less about Sol and more about making a point that certain shit isn't acceptable in public any more.

I don't think so. Sol's been on the receiving end from Tottenham fans ever since he left for Arsenal - and I've heard some of the taunts. Yes, they're completely outrageous but that's what football fans have been doing for years. It's nothing new. And Sol knew that would happen when he ditched Spurs for Arsenal - so he's no room to moan.

In today's "PC" society it may not be acceptable on the street - but inside football grounds have always been like this - and IMHO it'll be a sad day when they finally cut the balls off the supporters.

Did Tim Howard cry when the chants about his tourettes came out? No - he fucking laughed! :)

He might cry in private.

You're seriously saying racism & homophobia should be an acceptable sub-culture of football?

Do you go to football? I suspect not because you obviously don't know the Tim Howard song - it's sung by his own supporters ;)

Either way - it's a serious question - because I've sat in the stands with four thousand people singing the worst shit ever, but nobody actually really thinks like that.

It's not a "sub-culture" btw. It's THE culture.

I disagree...I think quite a few fans take it very seriously...

All this abuse of players from supporters ruins a game for me.
You don't get this kind of thing in many other sports

if its "THE" culture then its a pretty shitty one

If 3 people out of 30,000 take it seriously then there's pretty much nothing you can do about it anyway. Why ruin what is an on-the-edge joke for the rest of them just because there's a few fucktards in the world?

You'll be saying we can't sing "ten german bombers" at the germany fans next... ;)

Its not just 3 out of 30000...

If it were all in jest then why are the fans split according to which team you support?
Why not have mixed stands like in Rugby and cricket and tennis etc etc...

Cos if you did people would end up killing each other...

Football is a changing game now you have more Women and Children going so it has to adjust. I think a bit of friendly banter with other players is harmless fun but what spuds were singing was seemingly a bit out of order. Racism should have no place at all now our football and football stadiums would be in a sorry state if every non english player left the league because of small minded idiots.

I know the song that the Spurs fans sing at Sol and it's not racist. It does imply that he's an AIDS-filled mental-case and that they wouldn't mind seeing him hung from a tree tho ;)

But, and I mean this seriously, he HAD to expect that sort of shit when he ditched Tottenham for Arsenal. And the whacking great salary jump he took for that was part of the softener.

As for the "women and children" thing - oh piss off. Kids have always gone to football matches and it used to be a lot worse. And when Dad took them Dad knew the score...

Another thing about the "racism" thing in football - I can hand-on-heart say I've never experienced it. Not in England anyway.

Again, how many people here regularly go?

Ah but you forget, football isn't about the die hard fans any more, its a valuable export product. Thus all the past types of questionable behaviours are no longer acceptable for the sports bodies to accept.

But then I hate football, so frankly don't care.

I have been going to arsenal for about 14 years now around 15 games a season on average.

Spuds where doing Monkey chants with the gay bashing and thats where the trouble comes from most likely only 1 or 2 people but it still happens.

Aside from the hating football bit, you're right. So that's why so-called "obscene" chanting has to stay, goddamnit! :)

Had a friend at the Portsmouth match and he says there weren't any monkey chants - just the "Sol, Sol, wherever you may be...." oldie but goldie.

If that's the case then good on the Spurs fans for having a sense of humour and never letting Sol forget :p

racism and homophobia have no place in football. i've found that if you confront people who are using racial insults, they back down instantly anyway.

i have no idea what abuse sol campbell received but i'm sure he'll find solace in his big fucking house when he drives home after the game in his nice fucking car.

and yes, watching football is a joke nowadays - full of chavvy twattish kids, fairweather plastic fans and no atmosphere. it's got worse over the last few years in particular.

Surely the transition from standing to seats is what really killed the atmosphere - nothing like watching a game in a heaving mob - ah the good old days :)

If you go and watch proper football you do get to stand ;)

Nothing beats going 4-0 up away to Crawley on a Tuesday night whilst standing on the terraces with 56 other nutters :)

Agree with this. Remember reading a story about an old man who was bemoaning the lack of atmos. at Liverpool.

He said he used to stand in the Kop but the seats had killed it. When questioned he simply said "What do you do in Church when you sing?" :)

For all those who don't know what was sung at Sol, here it is:

Sol, Sol, wherever you may be,
Not long now til lunacy,
And we couldn't give a f***,
When you're hanging from a tree,
Judas **** with HIV.

Now, a little abuse/criticism/fun-poking at matches is fine. Stuff like this is beyond any form of acceptability. Trying to defend stuff like this makes you all seem like cocks.

Frankly, I think it's funny as fuck. I've a Tottenham loving mate who used to sing it in the office at an arsenal loving mate who sits opposite him and we all used to laugh.

I care less.

And, btw, where's the racist stuff there?

There's no lynching reference; you've just assumed that. Its actually in connection with the Judas reference they talk about hanging.

football is completely retarded these days anyway. I don't understand people who support their local club when its owned by an Arab, run by an Italian and full of people from every continent on the globe. Only thing that is remotely local is the bricks and mortar and they were probably put in place by a bunch of Polish.

I obviously need to read up on my biblical tales.

Indeed you do (remember that Tottenham fans are all good Jewish boys who probably know their stuff). Go in peace my son. Hold on a minute...aren't you a reverend or something?

It's actually a suicide reference - and they've been singing that song for years...

Why would the good Jewish boys know something from the New Testament though ;)

Either way - it just goes to show that there's more thought in it than simple thuggery :)
