Used planes a lot and only really had one scare in the air.
I hit some bad turbulence on the way to Malaysia once whilst flying with Virgin.
Lasted about half an hour, and sitting next to an old woman who was screaming and twiddling her prayer beeds DID not help my peace of mind.
Other than that all my experiences have been fine - touch wood!

I've only flown once and really hated it. Had a full blown panic attack on the plane.
Tbh, people that say you are more likely to die on the way to the airport than you are in a plane crash can stfu. That may be true, but I ask you this. In a plane crash or a car crash, which are you more likely to survive? I rest my case.
The way I've found to get over my fear of flying is information. I've started using MS flight simulator to teach myself all about flying. Information is power, and as long as I'm pretty confident that if anything happened on a plane I could take control, I thnk that one day I may be able to fly somewhere again.
Not for a few years yet though.

I've been on around 100 flights now, including small aircraft and helicopters, and I still get bloody terrified when a large jet is coming in to land.
The statistics about air safety are often given a spin to make them appear better (number of miles travelled). The vast majority of air accidents take place during takeoff or landing, if you remove the number of miles travelled between takeoff and landing, and base your statistics on just takeoff/landing distances, then suddenly air travel becomes far more dangerous, in relative terms.
I would say this though - a medium sized full aircraft is much much more fuel efficient than the same number of people travelling the same distance in cars.

The thing with aircraft, like cars, is that being mechanical - they can fail. Things can stop working. Obviously they get checked over when they're landed etc, but there's always a risk.
I find it funny when they say statistically theres more chance of being involved in a car accident, for the reason mentioned before.. namely, you could have 100 car accidents and never be seriously injured, but you're unlikely to survive 1 aircraft accident.

you'll be a-ok... I've got to admit when going transatlantic I'd be more thinking about the boredom and taking plenty of entertainment (and checking out the inflight movies beforehand) than any aspects of safety.
Even if it all went hideously pear-shaped, and both pilot and copilot keeled over you'd get to the ground in one piece... One of the most gentle landings I've had was in what almost amounted to a blizzard with strong crosswinds and zero visibility at frankfurt earlier this year. There was no hope the flight crew could land it manually as they literally couldn't see past the nose of the plane, so they switched to the autolander and the computer brought us down... shimple
if you're going to hit turbulence on your way over, chances are it will be over greenland, best thing to do is eat, drink and just get to sleep as soon as you can - generallly it's not harsh enough to wake you up, ignore the junk you've seen in the movies, bags do not fall out of the overhead lockers and for the most part everyone remains in their seat - if you're really lucky you'll sleep long enough to wipe a huge chunk out of the flight time.
Take books/magazines and music - don't count on the in-seat even working, sods law says it wont - and stick a spare pair of socks in your carry-on unless you're comfortable sleeping with your shoes - even in upper class your feel get a tad chilly at 30,000ft. I normally try to stay awake the night before to guaranteed a minimum of 6 hours kip inflight, makes a world of difference, and arriving early afternoon, as I think you will too, makes shrugging off the time difference easier.

I suggest playing IL-2 alot before flying, so in case the pilot and co-pilot conk out for some reason you can take over!

reading the comment about the sunset reminded me about something...
when you're returning to the UK (if you're arriving in the morning, say pre-11am) see if you can spot the shadow of the plane on the clouds (you'll need a window seat on the left side), if the sun is still low enough you get really trippy patterns on the clouds as the light refracts across the front cockpit glass... noticed it a few times recently, tres cool

I've always wanted to get one of those oxygen masks that drop down then sit next to someone sleeping and half way through the flight wake them up with my mask over my face pointing to it.

Yesterday I saw someone in a glider make a forced landing in a corn field next to an old runway. He was okay and I helped him get his little sailplane onto the concrete out of the field...
