I have had a customer having a go at me because in his words..

'you deleted my 3 emails I sent you without even reading them'

Now first of all I never received the emails he's talking about and secondly how would he know if I had deleted or not even read them? He said he flagged them and because of this he can tell that I deleted them

Is this possible for him to see know this? As i said, the email never came through anyway, but if it did and he'd flagged it, could he tell

In Outlook you can set a read receipt (also can detect an email delete) but it also requires the recipient to accept this. ie if you click "no" then they won't know one way or the other...

Perhaps your server deleted the e-mails...

Yeah i have the receipt thing turned off, which you can do in settings, but no this wasn't a read receipt notification. I have checked the webmail inbox and the messages are not there, so maybe it was deleted at source, but even so, can he still tell if that happened?

Doubt it once it's left his server there's nothing for him to access about it on yours afaik.

not using any exotic anti-spam things are we? also, if you're moving mail via a google thing, then you may want to check there. re the notification thing, this only works if the mail has actually been received by some mail client that understands such shite. a mail server or anti spam thing could delete silently and nobody would be the wiser.

Everything comes into the server at 123-reg then it gets sent via a pop to 5 separate devices, 2 laptops at work, my home pc, my phone and tablet. Its not showing on the server, so it wouldn't have arrived anywhere else. Its not that I care about, its the whole him telling me I deleted it without opening it

He's talking out of his arse

You can do this in Exchange, but a mail that goes out from Exchange to a POP3 server doesn't have any automatic tools to tell what's going on at the recipient end. So yes, he's talking out of his arse, but he might think that because it works on his work network, it works everywhere.

There are various services that let you send an email and be notified when it's been read. They're very primitive: they embed a teensy little white jpeg in the body of the email and then notify you by email when that jpeg is accessed on their servers (ie when the email is opened by the recipient). You have to be using HTML and the recipient has to allow the loading of remote images otherwise it won't work. And there's certainly no way it could be used to let them know that you deleted their email.
