I did what I thought I could never do: Install Linux and get it working satisfactorily.



Mandrake Linux 8.1, and it's working a treat.

Although for some reason it wigs out when trying to go above 1024*768 res, but I'll d/l the nvidia drivers and install them

Looks well so far

Works a treat bar the res prob. Gotta find a shitload of good apps and stuff now

And Summo's upset cos Partition Magic accidentally wiped me 70Gb HDD clean rather than moving and resizing.

Which contained WinXP.

The only reason mine got wiped was cos Partition Magic froze up midway through moving the data & resizing the partition. A reboot later and the drive was corrupt and unreadable, so I had to reformat it with PM again.

No great loss tbh, wasn't anything on there I hadn't backed up already that was of great value, other than me pr0n of course.

Is it worth installing from the CD I have, then just patching it up to the current version?

I have 6.3 on Cd at home.

Tried once before, but failed miserably.

any helpful hints tips etc would be welcome.

Well Mandrake virtually installed itself. As easy as WinXP was to install, which was piss easy.

Can't wait to get home and have a right good tinker with it

Oh and use Mandrake 8.1

It's got a lot of the newest hardware drivers ready to be installed automatically during install, and has the easy to use installer.

Oh and before I forget, you can buy the latest distro of MD 8.1 on this months PC Plus DVD edition in ISO format. That's where I got my distro from, and it works a treat.

Heh, nah basically only bought the DVD off of PC Plus to avoid waiting hours on the download. Didn't fancy downloading 1.89Gbs for the three CDs, even though it would have only taken 7 hours or so. Far handier just burning them straight off the DVD onto CD-R.

You can't dl Suse ISO from there site any more, not sure if you can still get it other places.
