So, who here has fishes, whether it be tropical fish, marine fish or cold water fish? I currently have a small starter tropical tank, have had it for about 2years now and im thinking about getting a new, bigger tropical tank as i kinda know what i am doing now. I only have one fish in the tank at the moment which is a red-finned shark, i had other fish, called neon and glowlight tetras, i had about 8 of each, and the tank was kinda overcrowded and the shark pretty much killed them off one by one, by picking at their fins until they couldn't swim then when they were dead he liked to eat them until i removed them. But it wasn't my fault it was Petsmarts fault (now Petsathome) they bloody said it was ok to put these fish together. Anyway heres a few of pics of the little bugger.

Nice fishies =D My dad keeps tropical fish, has about 100 in his tank atm iirc, its nice to look at, cant remember the sizes of the tank, but its quite big tbh.. Keeps many varietys and stuff, Angel fish etc, and does occasionally try to breed some, never works tho :) since the other fish eat the eggs.

But it can be quite a good hobby aparently, i was little and tried keeping fish and they all died =(

As for your shark friend, maybe keep him in the old tank alone.. and put the new fish in another tank? I doubt he'll get lonley...

PS! Never buy things from pets at home, especially fish, usually the people in there are randoms who know shit all about fish.

Find some specialist, check around on the net etc..

i've had tropical fish all the time when growing up at my mother's. Unfortunately, when i moved out mother wouldnt let me take the tank with me, admittedly it is hers but thats not the point is it.

The main breeds of tropical fish to be wary of are barbs and sharks, as they will nip and eat any other fish you put in there. There are also some colony fish that will only live with other fish of the same colony, for example cichlids. Apart from that the only other things i can think of off hand are japanese fighting fish, where you can only have 1 male fish per tank, as they fight, hence the name, though you can have fun with a mirror, and things like the small tropical crabs you can get, which will also nip at the fish.

If your getting a bigger tank i have a couple of suggestions:

1. get some bottom feeding fish (plecostomus, catfish etc...) these help keep the gravel clean
2. dont go to a generic pet store (i.e. pets at home)
3. You can get fish that will feed on the snails you can sometimes get in your tank with live plants, ask your local aquarium what they are called
4. dont go to pets at home
5. Go to either an aquarium or a garden centre that has a dedicated aquarium in it, here you will find people that actually know what they're talking about and the fish themselves will be better cared for and healthier
6. dont go to pets at home

Hope this helps :)

Yep, this time im going to go to an aquarium shop that just sells aquarium goods. But with the Shark im going to still put him in the new tank but get larger fish, because i have been reading info about them and it says they don't live well with smaller fish, so that was the problem. With the first fish i got in the tank, all i had was Platy's, about 10 of them and i succesfully bred 5 fry. One night i was laying in bed looking at my tank and i saw these fry swimming about so i put them in this breed pen thing so the fish couldn't eat them until they got big enough then i released them.

I have a fish in my freezer think I might get it out tonight and cover it in breadcrumbs, cook it in a little oil and serve with chips.

my mum has alot of platys and they breed quite often. personally i'm not a fan of platys.

whoever said that about the shark is correct. Years ago i bought 6 green tiger barbs and put them in my mum's tank, where they were the same size as most of the other fish and they bullied everything else in there. Mother, in her inifinite wisdon, didnt like this and so gave them away to one of her friends who had a massive tank (7 feet * 3 feet * 2 feet) which had only a few very big fish in and they didnt touch any of these fish.

Yeah the Platy's were really boring fish, but i'm going to look into angelfish, they look pretty cool, and im sure that my shark won't bully them ;)

Used to have tropical fish - then for some random reason the lil guys ganged up on a big fish and ate him alive

Used to have an eel aswell which liked to hop out the tank when you were trying to clean it.

After that we converted the tank and got a couple of Water Dragon Lizards.
Fun for 10 minutes, watching em catch live grasshoppers, then the most boring pets in the world.
