an idea for the insurance is thus -

get your mother and father in the same room
phone direct line
have them insure the car but put you as a named driver
with direct line this builds up YOUR no claims
as theyve been driving a long time, the insurance will be cheaper
pay them the money when its needed

as for cars i couldnt tell you. go for a 1.2 and if its get you from A to B thats all that counts.

I guess something along the lines of, Fiesta, KA, Clio, Saxo etc.

All small cars :D anything below a 1.4 basically otherwise it will be hard to get insurance unless your minted :D

remember its not just engine size which determines the insurance though. check which insurance group the car is, the lower the better.

I guess, that's bassed on the advert? :p

Alot of companies will let you build up your own no claims bonus.

Always buy a Car with aleast 6months warrenty. for your first car i would recommend a 1.2 or lower simply due to insurance prices.
Personally i would spend 3 Grand on a Deposit on a new car like a New Corsa and pay the rest of in finance u also get your first year free insurance. :)
(in northern ireland)

If you are buying used and u dont know much about cars (noted from your own post) i would recomend you buy of a dealer.
ALWAYS ALWAYS go on a test drive. (i my self go on 2. 1 during the day and 1 during the dusk/evening) this means u get to use all the features of the car and are sure you are willing to purchace.

Once you have made ur decision to buy, Bring down that 3 Grand in Cash, it works wonderfully well as a bargining tool, but nvr say you have 3 grand ofc, only 2400ish and only go up to 2700ish max if you rly want that car, or are just plain shit at haggling.

Last thing is get it HPI checked (dealers will have done this and if you ask for it they will be able to provide it) an HPI check is to make sure there is no outstanding finance on the car or that it has infact been an insurance write of and some twat has rebuilt it to sell.

Good luck getting your first wheels :D

If your buying a car I would do an AA check on it which cost around £30 and they can tell you everything about the car.

I was quite silly and bought an XR2i to begin with and hurt my pocket when I was younger. I would suggest a 1.2 anything :) Now Im even more stupid I have a Scooby which really hurts my pocket :)

I think myself a bank draught is a much better idea if buying private as you really dont know who you are dealing with (+ you get the stub as proff of payment incase the seller is a nutcase and reports vehicle stolen) :D

That being said i bought my car private off a person whom i work with's dad and he got himself a nice envelope with 4,500 euro is 50e notes :(

P.S. @ Amph ...Some people wont release the car if selling private for a check , some pricks wont even allow a test drive without a deposit/cash in hand ;)

As mentioned above I'd go for something with about 1200 cc. If money is tight I would give serious consideration to going for a less popular make like Hyundai or Proton or the like. You should be able to get a "newer" second hand car for your money but be aware that street cred will not be given. Also the resale value will be less when you trade it in or sell it on.

However ..... you will initially get more car for your money and the insurance will be cheaper.

Also ... haggle .... you are the customer and the salesman is NOT a charity merchant. He may claim to be cutting his own throat to give away a car at this price but he is lying.
Tell him you have other cars to look at.
Tell him you are in no hurry.
Tell him you may come back another day (they hate that ... most garages work on commision and the last thing he wants is for his mate to sell you the same car 2 days later cos its his day off...)
Dont let him tell you stuff like he can only give you discount price today and you will loose it if you dont sign.
When you get him down to his very best price then tell him you want a full tank of fuel and carmats.

Remember its your money. Its up to him to make the sale. And above all remember he is lying !"!!!

Well tbh i don't care about street cred, im not a wangster, i just want a car that's fairly cheap to run/look after ain't going to cost me shed loads to insure and is relatively reliable.

I've driven a car's before so i'm not a new driver, this is just my first car. Cheers for the help btw..

The only thing going against cars like Protons and Daewoos (or chevrolets they are now) is that their Euro NCAP ratings are usually very low compared to your Vauxhalls and Fords. This means that if you do have a crash, you're more likely to be very seriously injured. There was an interesting thing about it on Top Gear a while ago. Also resale value will be next to nothing.

Have a look on Auto Trader and see what you like. Also get a parker's price guide which will give you info on insurance group and how much it should cost.

youre missing the point. mey is a new driver (right?), putting him as the main person on the insurance will cost a fucking fortune. there is no other company afaik that will allow named drivers to get no claims.
at least going with direct line it will make it cheaper plus he gets his own no claims.

i currently do that now with my mam and dad :p

Not all of them let you take it away with you.

Directline would let you build up 4 years as a named driver do one year on your own and let you leave with 5 years.
Try the same with some others they give you 4 years no claims on your year with them but only let you transfer with 1 year when you go.

My first car was a crappy 1.3 1997 Fiesta. Think the insurance cost me £1500 (was 18 at the time 3rd party fire and therf), had the car 2 years without any problems. Built up my 2 years no claims and experiance. Then got 150bhp 2.0 alfa romeo xD. That only costs me £1000/year insruance fully comp(21 now)

Insurance on mine last year was £680 but then I do have 12 years no claims...

Worst ever insurance bill on her was £1200 but then when I started driving (back in 1992) I paid £750 to insure my MkII Ford Escort 1.3L which was old even then!!!

First car, keep it small, keep it cheap imo... Accidents happen, sooner or later you will bump it or scrape it etc...

I'd recommend Co-Op more over Direct Line, because I'm doing as you are...but I'm with Co-Op!!

ps. CO-OP>Direct Line!

Only prob is with Scoobies is that you get boy racers always trying to race you with '1.3 fiesta's or Saxo's' makes me giggle. Like they have a chance :)

do you have that trouble Dakkath? :)

Insurance companies are not stupid, if you are going to be the main person driving the car insuring you as a named driver could get 'messy' if they find out.

There isin't a huge amount of differnce in price as it is if he's a new driver he's going to get screwed over whatever he does.

well its very juicy.

I spend £45 a week just doing 20 miles a day 5 days a week. Thats with the occasional putting your foot down :) on a full tank and I go easy trying not to go into the 'Turbo' can easily stay above half a tank in 5 days. But you know once you get in 1 its so damn hard not to go into the Turbo.

Subaru are very reliable, bloody quick (japanese best imo).

When I bought it i filled it up with petrol - full tank (Friday evening) I was empty Sunday afternoon :) thats just a day and a half lol.

If your going to get a subaru you would need to get WRX STI pro drive (Best version imo) which is what I have.

But the only problem is that you need to have a fair bit of cash just incase something goes wrong as its very expensive to replace parts.

I got nothing bad to say about it. Will deffo get another 1 once I finished with the 1 I have now.
