My second car was a Mini, the first was a pickup. I learned an awful lot about cars with my mini, which in a roundabout way has led me to my current career 10 years later. I did all the stuff Willier mentioned to mine, and I loved it so dearly that I still have it and one day, time permitting, it will make a comeback.

I would heartily recommend one as a first car, but it will break down, so get yourself a friendly mechanic dood who will help you out when you try and fix it yourself.. Do fix it yourself too, you will learn loads it's great. Oh and buy your bits from a local factor, dodn't get ripped off in high street car shops, or Halfords.

My list of cars goes :-
Hyundai pickup (brilliant fun, wrapped it round a tree)
Mini (See above)
Fiesta XR2 (lots of fun, but fell apart at regular intervals)
Escort RS Turbo (200Bhp, barely controllable, chavmobile, but damn quick)
1.8 Zetec Escort (Nice Solid easy driving commuter-mobile)
Citroen Xsara Diesel (bought cheap off my company, slow, horribly slow, slowest car I have ever driven let-alone owned, but very economical)
Lotus Elise (ok, not yet, but I am aiming for about December/January time if all goes well)

BMW 325i and a Volkswagon Sharan 2.3

Darth what did you decide with regard to lessons ? The wife wants me to learn to drive, I was thinking of the crash course week thing, but some of the replies to your previous post on the subject put me off.
The wife has a Vectra 1600 cc I think , would that in the opinion of the motoring fraternity/sorority be a bit much to learn on ? the last time I had lessons, a couple of years ago, the instructor had a much smaller car and I was shite at driving that, is a bigger one easier, thinking power steering and posh brakes ?
Any advice would be very much Appreciated.

Nothing wrong with learning in a 'big' car - if you can do your three point turns and all that in a larger car, you'll have no problems if you took your test in smaller one. You should get professional lessons though; learning with family members or friends is the road to hell (pardon the pun).
