Just installing xp pro after running 98se for a while.

Do I use the XP firewall or use ZA?

New-style ZA is very nice. It even has "Learn Mode" so you can teach it what programs you want to let out.

I've never used XP firewall, so I can't comment on it.

Ever since I configured a home network, I have used a separate machine for the "router/firewall" job, that way if some bastage does get in and trashes it then no real damage done.

Currently running a dedicated Linux-based router/firewall called IPCop, only has a 20MB footprint so its dead easy to reinstall in the event of a hack.

I've heard good things about Smoothwall for exactly the same purpose. Though its straying well off the original question.

2.6 was good though... Now I use tiny personal firewall.. well renowned for bein good and is smallllll and useful.

to finally answer the question the XP firewall is fine to use - been running it for over a year now with 0 compromises on five PC's...

it scores full stealth with online scanners which is 'nuff for me

+ Less wank than Zonealarm
+ Get NAV in the package (so scans in/out e-mail, etc)
+ Flexable
+ Ad blocking (yes i know you can do that with a hosts file before somebody pipes up ;P)

- Gay Norton Style interface (personall really, i've just never liked it)

Tidy little proggy, ties in with IMs as well so essentially everything in/out is safe & secure.

Yea but its still crap, It only monitors INCOMING, so if you or someone else by mistake installed a program like a trojan it could communicate easily

technically that's shit your antivirus should be looking after - there have been plenty of trojans which have been able to walk round the likes of zonealarm if they detect em...

no thanks - they had one bug recently which rendered the whole app useless

I still stand by the XP firewall add NAV 2k2/2k3 and you'll be pretty much sorted
