I would urge people who had problems with freezing and whatnot to give it a go to see if they have actually fix0red it. Don't listen to Ch3tan's anti-Firefox propaganda. ;)

I would say FF8 seems faster than anything before it but I'm rubbish at judging the speed of these things. It seems as fast as Chrome if not faster on both systems I have tried it on, though. It definitely uses less memory than 5, 6 or 7.

Overwhelming the response on here to this release! Remind me to do another poll next month :)

It's still not faster loading then Chrome (loading the first instance of the browser that is), I've not tried it with multiple tabs yet, nor tested if it's still got freezing problems.

Tbh I don't venture into Techie half as much as pre the migration.. it used to be linked at the top of General didn't it? Or was it nested inside General... I forget but I have to go up out of the Front Room to get to it now. :(

Use the arrow on the right hand side of the breadcrumb bars (the "Home > Forums > Non gaming specific chitcat > Techie Discussion" bit) and you can jump to any forum from within any thread.

I shall now chastise Deebs for spelling chitchat as chitcat

If you want to sign your soul over to google, then go right ahead but that doesn't make Firefox shite. It's just shite in your opinion.

Indeed.
But I'd rather be surfing the internet within 5 seconds rather than waiting 20 seconds while Firefox thinks about starting up...

Well that's your experience on your machine mate, my FF8 loads up as quickly as Chrome.

Isn't that exactly the problem, which is partly why browser wars are so unimportant.

It's my experience on my work pc, home pc, work laptop and netbook....so it has to be firefox rather than the computer

Firefox 8 for me is better than FF7 but it still leaks memory when left overnight with a page open with shedloads of video/animated adverts. Plus once memory leaks like Steam/Sony does I get the CPU spike and have to kill the process.

Again, not really Dys, I find it faster on my work PC (shit old Dell box), home PC (quad core with 4gb ram) and my poxy Acer Aspire One. For every example there can be a counter example. If you don't like Firefox that's fine but just leave it at that.

You can't argue with the amount of people saying it meg, you've optimised your to run better. Out of the box chrome is superior, as for selling your soul to google, all that stuff is disabled by default.

I have no loyalty, I'll go with the fastest working browser, which FF still isn't.

Finally had enough of FireFox, if I leave it running with say 15 tabs open the memory usage creeps up and I then get introduced to a CPU spike every 15-30 seconds which lags the hell out of the browser. Decided to install Chrome and I am starting to like it.

Not sure if there is another thread around but what are deemed essential extensions for Chrome? (Also how do I add page speed to a toolbar????)

Final Fantasy 7 is miles better than any version of Firefox...omg!

I've finally moved over to chrome. Firefox was randomly chomping cpu cycles and ram, for no apparent reason. Only had 2 tabs open, and only addon (apart from the usual essential plugins) was adblock. It was using over 600mb of my ram, and 25-50% of my cpu, with my laptop's fan kicking up to high speed most of the time. The only thing that stopped me before was the fact chrome doesn't have a bookmarks menu, but I've since discovered it has a sub-menu for bookmarks on the settings menu.

I prefer Firefox the LastPass integration is neater. But by the time i add my extensions Chrome is noticeably faster for me, new version included. And fuck IE do the twits not realise that the Do you want to disable ad ins Question has slowed me down more than any add in ever did.

Hah me too I never bothered to setup IE so every time I start it up I get confronted with annoying questions. Makes me despise it even more. Same way WMP always asks me questions every time I use it, because I just don't ever use it. Don't be so inquisitive MS.

Has anyone actually "upgraded" to 9 yet? Any noticeable difference?

I think they're all pretty much on a par tbfh. I use FF. Have done for ages. Let it handle all the upgrades and away I go...

And 9. Like 8. Like 7. Yadda yadda yadda :)

Upgraded to 9 because it practically did it for me (in that it downloaded it in the background and told me it would install it next time I restarted FF). No noticeable difference. There's supposed to be big performance increases on pages with javascript but nothing else "exciting" with 9.
