Managed to borrow the Serenity film and season 1 of firefly.

Apparently they are both based on the same characters/environment - and its a fantastic SCI-FI series.

But... which came first ?

Should I watch Serenity then the firefly series ? or the series then the movie. I'd rather follow the plot from the start but dont know which to watch first !

The series came first.

I haven't seen the film, so don't know if it's prequel, sequel or contempory with the series.

Firefly came first, Serenity did a short run in the cinemas.

Yep series first. Serenity did about $50 million worldwide at the box office, more than enough to break even. DVD sales will push it into a very healthy profit. Sadly it is still doubtful that we will get another movie as Serenity didn't really deliver the kind of revenues that Universal Pictures were hoping for. I blame the lack of proper marketing rather than the quality of the film which I consider to be easily in the Top 10 films of 2005.

firefly came first, then the film, and the series got canceled after one series.

Serenity has actually jusy creeped over the 38million dollar mark so as yet isnt close to repaying the cost spent on the movie.

However if Serenity sells half as good as the FireFly series it should be good enough to get Joss to be able to give us something else to watch. The Series has sold over 600 thousand copies and is still selling at a good rate.

Just gotta make sure if you watch it and like it you tell everyone and more to go watch it.

That depends where you read I guess, the site I based my post on stated 28 million dollars in the U.S. and 20 million or so in the rest of the world. I don't dispute your figures though. Lets just hope the DVD sales are good.

its a shame really because both serenity (the movie) and firefly (the series) were damn good with an involving story and beleavable characters.

Took mum too see it after we sat down and watched the series and i would say watch firefly first you get to understand the backgrounds of the characters better for when you see serenity your not sat there going

"whos that, why are they doing that, who are they" although serenity did a damn good job of filling things in for the peeps watching.

It was just one of those films that was bound to be excelant but fail due to people not being interested. The other problem with it in chesterfield was it only lasted 2 weeks. a lot of my friends missed out.

Still they were damn fine film and series and it was a shame that aparantly firefly flopped due to it being shown at the same time as american football series on the other channel.

anywho i would recomend anyone to buy / watch these films basically cowboys in space :D

Agreed, alhtough for me however well the DvD sells, as far as I am concerned FireFly for me is over. Joss had to put too much information into the movie, where as the series took you there at a nice pace, which made you keep watching. So fingers crossed for a sequel so he can finish this amazing story.

What gets me is the majority of people that watch the show think its great, most that seen the movie thought it was awesome but its still below target. There has got to be some major failing with regards to advertising.

If you look at some of the journalists/critics write up they are all amazing. I Guess Universal thought why spend cash on advertising when the Browncoats will do it themselves just like they did to get the series on DvD.
