honestly dont just stick to what you know matey do stuff that you dont know anything about that way you stumble across some right little gems, sure you *could* go in to IT, but wheres the fun in that? when you get home at night your hubby says "good day?" your like "umm yea.... it was the sae as yours" or you could be saying "well, i fell in the sea urchin tank and got an anenemie stuck to the sole of me foot so had to hop for 2 hrs while they prised it off, then one of the sea lions gave birth and a dolphin was sick on my shoe... how was your day?"

I agree, do somamt you wouldnt normally. Im trying that at the moment, ok so its not the best paid job and prolly sont be doing it for very long and the job itself is not a career move, but its really been an eye opener, to what I feel I want now in a future career type thing (as well as being reat fun working with huskies rules)

I feel your pain Naetha.

I've been in my current job 14 years (omg I'm soo old) straight from uni and my choices, if you can call them that, were based on following the conveyor belt of school subject choices -> uni course -> job, without ever having a specific career in mind.

Alot of what you describe strikes a chord with how I feel, so if you come up with a master plan please share it here.

I get the impression a lot of people, myself included, look at the teaching profession when they find themselves in our position. I did however hear an interview with some guy who started as a teacher, became a head teacher and then a big cheese in the teaching unions and some of the stats he quoted about the negative side eg stress illness, assaults etc put me right off. Primary school level might be a different story but tbh, I suspect that would get old really quickly unless you were passionate about young kids (in a good way ofc ).

Not that I have been any good at following my own advice, but I do try to be honest with the graduates I mentor and tell them to try another company (maybe a different size) or a different aspect of the industry eg try contracting rather than consulting. However, more and more often I find new graduates quickly decide to get out of the industry and go retrain at something else. More power to them I say, I just wish I had done the same 10 years ago and not taken the 'easier' route of sticking with the devil I knew.

Be very careful before going into IT support. If you don't think you'd like to deal with 35 chavscumknifewieldingmaniacteensfromhell, you obviously haven't tried to explain how to send e-mail to a guy who's spent his whole life weaving suit fabric or using an adding-machine...

Friend went to work for the Goverment on Contract. After 8 mounths everyone but him had left that kew how to use the data base system, que big pay rise for "training people" and much richness.

Working in Local govement has good bonuses though.. so prehpas a Town Planning or something would be good. Uses some of the skills you have already, then you can always go from the public sector to the private sector later (architects developer etc) for ££ as a consultant.

train to be an enforcement officer. then progress to trading standards with the diploma of trading standards. and the learn while you work bollocks scheme.

ofc im biased. as in 3 years i will be in a trading standards officer and probably taking some of you uncooth people to court

if u have the confidence and the knack i would take the TESOL/CELTA course and become an English Foreign Language teacher. This time last year I had no idea what i wanted in life, then i travelled for 3-4 months came back decided to do the course and i will now be living in spain next year. And its great fun and u meet lots of people and u can go almost anywere on the planet and meet lots of interesting people. What more could you want
