I am bud, I appreciate the work they do but let us be honest, they get paid poorly and many are on minimum wage.

We might have better status in Sweden, get around 2.000 euro a month after tax, 32% tax. Would never stand to do a normal 9-5 job, work 12 hour days for 5 days, on 4 days off, 4 days on, 5 days off, then get 2 weeks paid vacation every 3 months to save overtime, then 5 weeks vacation each summer.

I just got back in from talking to two army career's people (one of them was a sergeant major for some reason, normally its just been corporals and sergeants ) about my choices, and it seems like I could go for just about any regular trade in the combat or combat support area's - Armourer, Dog Trainer, etc... bit of a suprise as I thought I was fairly limited!

I told them about the Infantry bit and what I'd originally wanted to do, but they made the Signals sound pretty good for the prospects - good pension, instant lance-jack promotion and potientially Corporal within two years. However it does sound a little bit like a civi job with none of the fun stuff like shooting guns and standing infront of bullets, which is putting me off a bit - I really enjoy the idea of learning the infantry side of things.

The revelation that I've got a lot of choices has kinda made me even more lost than I started off, but I guess I'm grateful I've got the choices, I just need to make sure I make the right one.

they didn't *have* to make it sound good. they could have made it sound however they wanted. remember you will be going on drills and things as is a couple times a year anyway, at least that's how it is in Holland. you will still be a soldier, just that your role is to make sure people can talk to each other, or other communications, data, IT things even, maybe.

if you're completely gun ho for digging holes and getting shot at, then by all means, but others would be standing in line for the job you'd be letting go.


edit: I've been on some IT courses with Army types, and they all seemed to be pretty stand-up guys, physically fit, etc, as well as being into the IT stuff we were doing. It's not that they're going to chain you to a desk or anything
