Unfortunately it would seem that my trusty old 9400 GT won't quite cut it anymore :(

Downloaded just cause 2 from steam yesterday and my card is just howling of pain even on lowest possible settings...

Thinking about a Asus GTS 450 1GB PCI-E TOP DirectCU (nVidia i might add)

It seems to be quite decent and is pretty cheap but my knowledge of this stuff is pretty much nonexistent.

I have a budget of around £150 and this card would cost ~£120, so if someone knows of a better card around that price i'm all ears.

nVidia or ATI doesn't matter at this point, despite my luck with ATI i'd be willing to try one again. :)

The 6850 is in that price range and crushes the GTS 450.

( the 6850 and 6870 actually give slightly worse performance than equivalent 58xx models by like <5%, but cost like 60-80% less they are awesome price/performance cards ).

That's the correct card model yes.

They will all be minimum spec, but different cooling/factory overclocks/brand change the price.

I've got 2 x 6870's in my machine that I've just finished building. The cost/performance thing was the deciding factor. Two of them give much better bang for my buck than one huge mega card. Allegedly.

I bought a 5870 in June, it always happens to me. I will never learn. :(

Providing they do the profile properly, ordered me a 580 this weekend.

that's slightly over my budget :(

the 6850 is just about at the breaking point for what i can afford..

how big is the difference between that and the 6870?

its ~£50 more expensive where i live so if the difference is minimal i'm not even gonna consider it...

About a 10-15% performance difference between them, not staggering and you won't notice it unless you're trying to play crysis on a 30" monitor.

I'm after a 2nd gen card that supports DX10 - my lad is going to buy it out of his xmas money as he has got Just Cause 2 to play... other games played include COD Blops, MW2 CSS and the like.... what's the decent budget model these days?
