All the time there has been many remakes of old films. Some have been pretty good on the remake but some not as good as the old classics.

I for one really hope they remake 'JAWS' an all time old classic and with todays technology it could be really good.

What films would you like the film makers to remake?

Remakes are cool, gives a whole new generation of people the chance to see the old story. Those who are "retro-anal", can keep watching their classics and just not watch the new ones.

That aside, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action would be one i'd like to see.

Also, Last Starfighter.

Because the older, while having a "golden aura of memory", are mostly crap quality and it ruins the immersion completely.

Where, for example, the Last Starfighter effects were up to date and "whoa" at the time, now you only watch those classics due to the story and the "classic" aura of it all.

Also, if someone had shown you(not you as individual) a film from the 50s, in the 70s, you wouldn't have cared for it as it didn't look good.

There is simply no reason not to make remakes, as there's no "big pool of movies" where they are, in limited amount, drawn out of and one remake doesn't mean you won't get your special movie of the year out.

There is no reason, give me one, i'll listen, and no.."because they suck" isn't a reason.

Theres quite a few old film's that were really bad, for example... Texas Chainsaw Masacre - The new version in my opinion is far superior to the old version. Although I recently bought 'Halloween' 2007 remake and the old version is far better in my opinion. Another example: King Kong that in my opinion is a fantastic remake.

If they decided to remake alot of films i would say it would have to be down to the individual on how he approaches it. I just hope they remake 'JAWS' as I think it could be as good if not better than the old version.

Fuck remakes. They're always shit

You can put as many bells & whistles on the new version as you like. You can cut in state of the art FX. You can have a budget of $400m. But at the end of the day you'll never be able to recreate the atmosphere of the original of 30/40 years ago. They used different film in those days. It wasn't picture perfect. Eg you might have a hair in the gate. Critically, actors these days aren't a patch on the old school. Where are you going to find another Roy Schneider ? Nowhere. And the music. Jaws is John Williams. What do you want to see on a Jaws remake ?

Oh and Texas Chainsaw original was superb.

Some films they couldn't remake anyway.

I mean, look at Casino.. HOW could they remake that? (10 points to who ever has actually seen it)

ye gods !

Your asking to remake 2 absolute classics, Jaws & TCM. Neither one could be bettered even if they tried. Movies are timeless, get it in your head !

The only one I can think of are LA Takedown which was re-made as Heat both good films imo. There was less than 10 years between the two though I think.

Quality in a movie will always come through, no matter how old thy are. I used to love watching old B&W films on channel 4 on a sunday afternoon when I was a kid.

There have been a few current films that are re-makes of the japanese originals from only a couple of years b4. The Departed was just a re-make of Infernal Affairs, there is only 4 years between them, i think it depends on which one you see first

I agree with lamp though on the re-makes of classics from the 50's and 60's, you cannot re-create the nostalgia and the 'grainy-ness' (is that a word) of those films, no matter how much CGI you throw at them

On the other hand, i though Casino Royal was great, and that had been done in the 60's, but as a tounge in cheek comedy, it was totally re worked and re written that was true to the original Flemming, which i think only improved it

eegads you kiss your mother with that mouth???

:twak::twak::twak:

thou shalt not remake Jaws!!...ever! for one they'd either make the shark "evil" or "misunderstood" (i.e. see some of the sequals) whereas in the original movie they pretty much just kept the shark as a shark (all be it a more devious one). The characters in Jaws were superbly played, no one could play Quint as well as Robert Shaw (the man was the man!) and I personally think that Roy Scheider was excellant as Brodie, in the book the character is not at all likable (actually most of the characters in Benchleys book are bloody unlikable) but Scheider made him a likeable fellow just doing his job under adversity without any superhero bollocks that your average joe isn't likely to be able to pull off (Ok shooting the compressed air cannister was a bit superheroish but i lie to think of that as more smart than unbelievable), And Mat Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) was excellant, with the right micx of know-it-all rich boy but also humble likability to stop his character becoming the irritating twat he is in the book (that also has it off with ellen brodie Oo). In addition to all this, unless the remake was set in the 70s then it wouldn't happen as it does in the film, they would have to completely change the story line because A) great white sharks are now protected by law and B) the public have a greater understanding and appreciation of these animals and would not all insist on going swimming, they'd all be on the beach with binoculars...sharkwatching and looking out fr TV presenters.

as a film that absolutely never, ever under any circumstances should be remade I think Jaws is definately one of them, I hope I have rpesented a compelling argument and not bored you all to tears but it is (and has been for a very long time) one of my all time favourite movies and inspired my love of the ocean and its creatures (although it is also the reason I have never swam in the sea since I saw it).

If howeer, you want to see a remake of oceanic tendancies then may I recommend another Peter Benchley story: The Deep (originally with Nick Nolte and a great big conga eel) would make a good candidate as the original didn't really measure up to the book (although it is not a bad movie, it could be better). Or how about Pirannah? that was a great book and would have made a really good film but the only version of it i saw was a rather damp and bloodless (in more ways than one) affair.

Thomas Crown Affair was a pretty cool remake - not taking anything away from the original - and was faaaar better imo.

I preferred the newer charlie and the chocolate factory to the older one, though it not being set in England kind of spoilt it :p

Oh and JUST because it will cause trouble...Terminator 1.

Watched it one day and...well...let's say the memory should've been kept in "golden adore".

It's not bad, but, it's not that good anymore.

Kidding! :D

Would've been a nice troll post though.

But seriously, it is a bit cacker then i remember, not that it needs a remake, gods no, but it's not that good.

New generation of back to the future, or other timetravel movies, would be fun. Maybe a freakin motorbike. That's always cool.

Surprised they haven't done a TV spin off of back to the future. After all they screwed around with Superman by making Smallville. Sky One would snap it up - like they do every other shite US show.

The Buffy the Intergalactic Time Travelling Superhero who' s really a Mild Mannered Vaccuum Cleaner Salesman but secretly can open a portal to alien worlds and defeat yet more rubber-costumed aliens with $40 special effects Show.

I heard there will be a remake on one of the "Death Wish" movies, and Sylvester Stallone will be playing Paul Kersey instead of Charles Bronson. That will be interesting if it happens.

For you Jaws fans, and those who do not beleive in remakes, LOVEFiLM.com: Shark In Venice by Danny Lerner on DVD is a great example of why not to make these films.

To me its like cover versions of great songs, some pull it off by the width of their pubes, others should be shot. Some films insult the original by looking nothing like the original title, take The Italian Job, the original is a master, plain and simple, classic lines, true Brittish grit, one liners that no one else could ever pull off. The modern version we hoped would either a) pick the story up later on or b) remake the excitement of the original. But it did neither, and the only thing it had to do with Italy was the first 3 minutes of a stupidly over-complicated robbery.

Alfie is another example, theres something lost in translation here too. The original was a gritty, sexxist, politically incorrect view of how a propa Lunduna (thats Londoner to you heathens) Jack the Lad was in the 60's, not some manic depressive yank with more money than you can shake a stick at finding the moral of the tale at the end.

Jackal - Bruce Willis played his role well I thought, nicely dragged up to modern standards, great remake and on par with the original.

War of the Worlds, wow, great remake, although it did steer away slightly from the book, but still a great film making great use of modern SFX.

Battlestar Galactica is great too, but I still beleive Starbuck should be a chap! Great use again of modern tech.

However, it does seem cheap that soooo many remakes are appearing, despite the millions the writters are making, they seem to have exhausted their imagination, why write new stuff when you can convice the next gen that this film is all new and all their own work.

Sitting on my shelf to the right of my computer along with my collection of good movies.

that being sad, remakes can be a good thing.

It almost always boils down to whatever or not you saw the original before the remake.

If I have seen an original old movie and then see a remake, I feel stuff left out.
If I see a remake and then the original, i am bored to death usually by the original.

Basicly a remake of a movie is like when they do a translation of a movie; Like a few years back it was the big thing for hollywood to copy Japanese horror movies and spew out a dozen or so horror movies in short time that way; Some was negative about it, wanted the originals, others merry about it, as they could finally get the story.
Some I knew was totally outraged by "The Ring", hating the English version and praising the Japanese original.
saw both, and meh, I wasn't horrified by the Japanese version, I can't help but find it amusing and laughable to listen to them talk; Ruins the illussion of the movie for me; Much creepier besides that, I'll give it that, but "The Ring" in English had me immerged into it and was spooky, not creepy in the same way, but spooky.

Also, the Italian Job; Case where I watched remake before the original; It was a brilliant movie, then I picked up the original, by mistake actually, saw it in a bin of cheap movies and didn't look at the back of the dvd, just did a quick purchase and then discovered later it wasn't the one I had seen, but an much older version; Fun and entertaining, yes, but without a doubt a B or C movie, while the remake is an A movie. Both acting (and clearly directing) and effects was bad in the original, or not so much effects, but rather the persudo-science was laughable, again, ruining the illussion of the movie.

But I am making way to long a post here, my view is the remakes are a great thing; As long as it is done with effort and with modernization; i.e. translation the movies into a new era of technology and culture

Errrr you do realise that most films are either based on books or real life events twisted to fit into a shorter form- ie films?

besides, that was a cartoon and it wasnt even the full story...

Correct me if i am wrong but isnt the LOTR in three parts so if you watched the first one alone it would also be deemed only part of the story?
