i think the trouble with remakes is they loose the context of the time they were made. for example - a film like bladerunner is intrinsicly tied with the vision of the future that was the dominant ideology of the time (1982) and thus when we watch the film there is a nostalgic reaction to the portrayal of a particular idea/place/time based upon the context we relate it to. be it in a critical or sub-concious manner, i think this is (in a very short summarisation of what i think on the subject) why film remakes do not work, on the whole. not 'faithfull' remakes anyway.

my favourite ever remake is scarface - and that worked so well because it was updated and made relevant for the time. the original and the remake were made 60 (maybe 50?) years apart, so obviously a lot of things changed in that time.

not to mention that most remakes are just vapid, cash-in crap!

I think the original 3 star wars movies didn't need the extra extended director cut special edition bollocks treatment to be honest. They were fine as they were. Classics

most remakes are pants though, i mean look at the remake of lady killers that was diabolical. and king kong, i refuse to watch the remake of that i mean the 80s one was bad enough but in the most reicent one they totally humanised kong which was (imo) unforgivable, in the origanal kong was an animal he wasnt humanised any more than can possibly be done by people making a fake animal.

its like when people (and i use the term loosely) decide to remake a perfect song (for example run dmc and aerosmith walk this way) and murder it, they should be garotted for such a hideous assult on innocent ear drums.

There are some great remakes, but then the shockers come out (I also hates the recent remake of King Kong) and it ruins it. I did like the new Halloween, I thought Sabre Tooth from XMen played a great part as Michael Miers.

Romeo + Juliet (1996) (much better than a lot of the older ones)
The Alamo (yes yes, John Wayne was good in the original)
Ben Hur (original was <WWII)
The Bourne Identity

I suppose the american version of The Ring and The Grudge was nice for those too lazy to get their heads around the Japanese cultural background...

I got to admit I don't know how many film remakes I've seen Except maybe The Mummy, I can't imagine how I'd feel about the 1932 version, probably bored

How about PoTC3, I was rather disappointed with that one.

Most tend to be let downs though after the hype (LAdykillers by the Coen Brothers)

Would like to see an attempt to remake Dr Caligari or some other old German Expressionism films, just to see what it would come out like

Would love to see a decent set of Dune films. The Sci Fi Channel series was not that bad, but could have been so much better given a decent budget.

Even if not a movie as such, Doctor Who is rather nice as a "remake", i know it's not technically a remake, but it still is.

Also quite a few other series, that were hits, work today too.

Also any "funk filled" movie has made a decent remake; Charlies angels, starsky and hutch. I enjoyed them.

One could say spider-man is a good enough remake. Or any other superhero movie. Except that utter bollocks they called superman. But then again, only decent superman is that high-school drama they call smallville, if you don't count originals.

aww i love the original jorror movies like the mummy, the wolfman, frankenstein etc theyre great! and theyre only like an hour and a bit long too!

the mummy film with brendan fraizer (sp?) is great fun though it sticks vaguely to the original plot they add loads of extra stuff they didnt have the time or capacity for in the 30s.

depends on what the director/writer had in mind - if they saw the movie and thought "imma remake this" without the litterature in mind, then yes its a remake. if they read the litterature and thought "imma make this even tho there already is one - i can do better though!" then its no remake.

I'd love to see the Necroscope books made into movies. Problem is that unless directed by a real fan of the books, likely to be shite. Someone like Pete Jackson who's a Brian Lumley nut.
