Guys,

Anyone know the legal standing for showing films with a classification of 15 or 18 to minors?

Is this illegal or just a guidance?

If it's in your own home then I would have thought it's a judgement decision.

Public showings would be illegal in the same way that selling those rated films to anyone under that age is illegal.

I'm pretty sure it isn't illegal. For example if you took your kid to a movie he was to young for he would be allowed in since, its your choice as his parent.

I'm not certain though.:)

ah - just found the website :

No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video or DVD.

No, in cinemas its the same as here; its different for games and dvd sold at retail though, where it is a guide, whereas PEGI/BBFC ratings have legal weight here (although PEGI is a 'guide' its enforcable by Trading Standards, and BBFC by the police).

Not on all games. If it has an 18 certificate it's illegal to sell/rent to an under 18.

I'm not talking about the mature rating 16+ etc. I'm referring to games like san andreas that actually have an 18 certificate like a film would.

Yeah, i just said that's what applies in the UK  . In America it isn't like that - ESRB (the ratings board) can penalise a retailer who's signed up with them but the ratings have no legal weight the way film certificates do. http://www.esrb.org/esrbratings_faqs.asp#9

I misread your post. It was an innocent mistake. But yet again you seem hellbent on making yourself look like a patronising know it all.

You misread his post because it was quite difficult to read correctly. The most well worded sentence in the world was it not, no it wasn't.

well, I wrote to the BBFC and heres their response :

t's certainly a bad idea (in our view) but it's not actually covered by any law. The law (Video Recordings Act 1984) only makes it illegal to physically supply an age restricted video or disc to an underaged person, not to show it to them.

Is it not the same as Alcohol i.e. Against the law to sell to under 18's but they can consume it from the age of 14 in restaurants etc under parental supervision
