Hiya,

By the looks of things Windows XP restored an older backup or something.

When Windows loaded all of the files that i had on the desktop were gone (i had the whole screen covered with them almost :p 3 remain), windows refuses to have a "quick launch" toolbar on the start menu..not sure what else has changed...

I cant remember what its called, but there used to be a program in accessories that allowed you to change to an older backup.. was thinking that i might be able to change Windows back to how it was before this.. ( oh yeah this has been "removed")but in a sense that would be a newer backup?

Not talking much sense am i.. if anyone can suggest anything to try / or a program it would be great. I would not normaly care but had so much college work... which i have not backed up clap clap me..

[Edit] Also when i ran scan disc it said something about not being able to retain the lost data.. i hope thats not true :(

Thanks for any help!

Hi Jestra

Just a flying visit :( If you're running Windows XP then you may be able to use the System Restore facility to go back (or forward in this case) to an appropriate system restore point. The utility is located at 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System Tools' > 'System Restore'. However, I believe the feature is designed to restore only settings and drivers etc, not personal files like your work. I'll post again when I'm next free.

Kind Regards

This sounds strangely like a new profile has been created.

If you go into control panel>User accounts it will show you how many users you have.

Tried that and nope no other user :/

Is so weird, the "System Restore" tool is not listed in accessories anymore..

When i try to add it from "Add/Remove Programs" its not listed in there either at all.

Im guessing that everything is lost.

Its should be in accessories>system tools

If not, reboot and press f8 to get the system boot menu and try last good configuration

Check C:\Document's and Settings\<Your Username> and see what's there. Check the "Desktop" folder and your documents. Also the "Templates" folder (if you made any custom ones for office or anything.

Basically, have a hunt around in there to see if any of the files in question are still present :)
