Just thought id let you guys know a bit more about MMA (mixed martial arts) and different fighting. Since there was that street fight video the other day and i posted a couple of videos, i thought id just put this out there for those who want to know more about it.

Just writing a really short paragraph for the history; Pancration is free fighting which they had in ancient greece, and became a lost art. In brazil the Gracie family had free fighting - Vale Tudo, and fought masters and fighters from all over the world to show the ability of brazilian jiu jitsu. In the 90's the UFC (ultimate fighting championships) was born in america and faced alot of controversy. Due to this the company almost closed but Dana White bought it out, with his money from his boxing career, and with Zuffa. During this time PrideFC was born in Japan, and many American fighters went over there.

Theres also other organisations such as K-1 which is just stand up fighting but any style, kickboxing, boxing, muay thai, TKD etc. The ADCC - a grappling competition held annually. K-1 Heros, KOTC (king of the cage), pancration (minor org that went big then failed), RINGS. And more minor organisations. But PrideFC and UFC are the big names. Rules vary between orgs.

I know that was all a bit long but tried to keep it short.

Fighters now fight in weight categorys, Heavyweight being 205lbs and over, then middleweight, light heavyweight, welterweight, light weight etc. Originally in UFC and Vale tudo there were no weight categories but this all changed with Zuffa and when the sport became a body and was sanctioned.

Fedor - Current pride heavy weight champion, undefeated (1 loss but very disputed, ref stoppage and was due to a illegal blow delivered to him that cut him).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkJY_Sf7C4I&search=fedor emelianenko

Cro cop - another pride heavyweight figher, moved from K-1 to MMA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk2N9U5TpuE&search=cro cop highlight

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto - light fighter, 144lbs fights 160lb people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F48Fxnu3Jek&search=Kid Yamamoto

Genki Sudo - brilliant fighter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pJsbOmrYNY&search=genki sudo

B.J. Penn - American fighter in the UFC, amazing fighter, rised to black belt in BJJ in 5 years. Current contender to the UFC welterweight title.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAC9QyFxGMI&search=BJ Penn

Matt Hughes - current welterweight champion in the UFC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyzN8xQZWWA&search=matt hughes

Royce Gracie - farther of MMA to a great extent. Fighting hughes in a none title fight tonight. Old but great fighter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2TRf3hrGz8&search=royce gracie

Ken Shamrock - very well known fighter. UFC to WWF and then back to MMA with Pride and UFC he has an open contract to fight in eithar org, but he is at the UFC and will stay there it seems, he is getting old

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7dIKNLBYWM&search=Ken Shamrock

Bas Rutten - amazing fighter, retired but liekly to be fighitng again this summer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG24SBwjNu0&search=Bas Rutten

Theres many other names but these are a few you may find interesting. Hope this gives some info for those that may be slightly interested.

Thought id mention the Ultimate Fighter realityshow that is on its third season now. Its a series of 12-13 episodes or so where 16 fighters live and train in two teams under the tutelage of different UFC champions. Each episode there is an elimination fight between the fighters (8 of them are heavier weightlclasses and 8 are lighter). At the end of the season the 2 finalists in each weightclass fight in a big live show. Its gotten pretty popular in the US and has probably done alot to showcase the sport.

Aye I was hoping Gracie would win too, he was a childhood hero of mine, though I doubted he could win, the gracies just don't seem to cross train enough, plus Royce is a little long in the tooth. Anyone know if theres any truth about the rumours of a fight with Rickson Gracie coming up?

Woot Bas Rutten is Dutch \o/

What is it with Dutch people doing so well in all those different combat type thingies .. I think there were several pwning dutchmen in K1 as well.

Better highlights video of Bas Rutten

Kinda weird he's the only one of all the highlights I see constantly "slapping" (hitting with an open hand) rather then punching and yet he seems to do way more damage with his hits.

Any specialist who can explain this?

Hitting with the inside of the palm makes for a less cushioned hit - when you hit with a fist there is a certain flexibility in the fist that will cushion the blow a little bit, no such thing if you strike with an open palm. More difficult to land such a blow effectively though (more rigid arm and can glance off etc) and it isnt very good for your hand, wrist and lower arm either (since there is less to cushion the blow for you as well.

Not sure if this is what the person you talk about does though (didnt watch the clip).

Used to like Tito Ortiz but havent watched it for a while. I remember about 3 years ago, some brits went over. SOme brit black guy knocked out an unbeaten UFC fighter in 4 seconds and some pub brawler from sunderland filled in another yank :D havent watched it since then though

Oh and to elaborate on the "open hand" thing - remember that the most effective blows to knock someone out arent only hard. Knocking someone out means that you set his brain in motion so that he blacks out, same when you "rock" someone, this is also the brain set in motion inside the skull (bumping the wall of the skull etc) temporarily supressing its functions so that you lose balance etc. It doesnt require much force to do this, just a whiplike hit, and this can be done in a variety of ways, not just by a hard straight hit with a fist.

yeh so its more to do with livershot KO and pancrase rules. Open palm shots to the body are very effective if done properly.

Guy from sunderland is Ian Freeman, he was ok, nothing amazing really. He got KOd quiet a bit. He was in a car crash recently.

Tito is a good fighter but very big headed. He has a title shot coming up soon, and is one of the trainers on TUF (The ultimate fighter reality tv show, i dont watch it tho).

Similarly, Noah, the guy who quit that show in the semi finals is a pussy. He had skills, stamina and showed some heart. He shouldnt have quit, that was a stupid move. This was his life goal and he stopped it for some girl he knew for 6 months who didnt trust him at all.

Gypsys are over rated, too many people watch lock stock. Theyre brawlers, not technical fighters, and theyre power is pretty limited against a good fighter. I mean Prince Naseem was amazing, power, style and good knock you out from any angle, a average gypsy cant do that.

If been hit flush on the chin by people 30lbs or more heavier than me and been fine, sometimes rocked but quick recovery, cover up and keep going. A strong chin is one thing, i aint no mark hunt - unbelievably good chin, or Nog - amazing recovery (got KO'd against mirko crocop filipovics left high kick and was up and pulled guard almost instntly).

Thai fighting is really good, and a great form of exercise, the conditioning thai fighters do is amazing, and no its not like kickboxer. Thai fighting is the science of 8 limbs, legs, knees, fists and elbows. Some great muay thai fighters include ramon dekkers and paramuk. I currently train muay thai and its alot of fun. Look for a school near yourself and check it out. Or try a boxing school or anything really, its great fun.

Alot of the dutch train martial arts it seems, there are world famous gyms that people travel to just to train with them. The Dutch have a very hardcore stand up game, many seem to come from a TKD background but quickly move on to other styles such as kickboxing, or blending boxing in or karate etc.

Bas Rutten is famous for his LIVER SHOT! KO's which he himself admits to enjoying using aswell. He has more KOs from livershots than any other type of win. Being punched in the liver hurts, ALOT, and the pain can knock you out, but it hurts alot. Its like being kicked in the balls so hard that you pass out. Opposed to a KO from being hit in the chin which knocks you out and theres no pain.

Also remember that Bas Rutten has unbelievable power and is very trained.

Only thing that's crap about these sports is that it fuels the fire of those whackjob wanker wannab fighters out there who can't do sh*t about being pro but kick the crap out of some guy in a bar for some spilt beer.

Fighting certainly isn't cool.

Hmm, id have to disagree, i mean, i know quiet a few people that train and have been in similar situations that just hold their cool. And more often than not, the people that train are the guys that stop the fight from starting. Sure there will be those that train and want to use it to show how tough they are, but they seem to be in the minority.

Well i did say "whackjob wanker wannab fighters"...hardly the type that stops a fight from starting.

I didn't say that everyone was one.

true, i was just trying to show the other side fairly. Also, many of the people that train have no aspirations of turning pro, or even fighting amateur, just enjoy the skills and art.
