Found this on another forum I visit.

1) Go to the link below. After reading each window click on the boy
in the lower right corner.

2) In the last window type in your answer in the white box using the
keyboard (there is NO cursor). You will be amazed....and no, I don't
know how it's done .

He got mine wrong but then I realised my subtraction wasn't quite as hot as it could've been (read: it was wrong). So I went through again with the same numbers and he got it right.

It's clever and once I've worked out how it works (or someone pastes an explanation) I'll be able to walk away slightly happier.

erm, you're not supposed to enter the circled number so you should have entered 083 :p

wierdly enough I chose exactly the same numbers as teeds when I tried this out and I hadn't read the thread.

edit: I got the subtraction wrong..

i can't off the top of my head work out a mathematical prrof for why it works, althugh i suspect it's something to do with a finite level of combinations which are possible.
first number there are 9999 combinations
the second option however only giver 23 combinations based upon the first 4 numbers in a random order. which gives a total of 229977 total combinations, which looks like a lot, but isn't. I suspect form that it can work out from teh 3 figures given what the extra figure has to be based upon a finite table

It's much simpler than this, and is all about the number 9.
