The view at the top of my parents' road in Italy...

I took this with my Dad's Nikon D50 from the top of their road.

Keswick, Lake District.

The best vantage point was right in front but that entailed tripod shadows. The light's a little muted as this was the last of the sun breaking through the cloud cover beyond the hills way over to my right.

[1/25 sec @ f/16 - 17mm polariser and maybe 0.6 ND grad - can't remember]

No flash (as I don't have one!). My photo pal and I waited for an hour or so for the light to break through. There was substantial cloud cover to my right and the sun was setting fast behind the hills.

Superb photo Milou! I remember that from flicking through your photos - the light is perfect, what sort of time of the morning was that? Up here in Skirtland, the golden "sidelight" is about 5:30am just now, and I just can't be bothered at the mo ;).

Edit: just read you said "sunset"

Like that Gaff, thought about trying that in a high contrast B&W sort of way?

Cheers, it has two stacked ND grads to balance out the exposure, the light was very pinky/purple which has given the dirt a weird hue.

No offence Big G, but that 2nd image makes me want to vomit. Not a fan of that style, personally. :)

Might post an entry or two a bit later once I've had a rifle through things.

Mr G if you have a 1920x1200 crop of that, I'd be pleased to have it as a background sirrah!

What's the focal length on that?

It's 17mm.

My main workhorse lens for landscapes and "walkabout" is my 17mm-70mm which is a damn site improvement over my old kit lens: much sharper, better colour/contrast and hugely better build quality. Also has SDM which is Pentax's silent autofocus thingy jiggy.

Have you had a look at the Sigma 10mm-20mm? I was having a little look at that today as a consideration for a wider landscaping lens, seems to be pretty good. My 10mm-17mm is specifically a fish-eye, so it has stupid barrel distortion, but doesn't work so well for landscapes.

also if you have a larger res version of this pic you would not mind sharing as a desktop wallpaper it would be nice :)

I do indeed, I have it ready, can you suggest a free hosty thingy that I can upload it to in TIFF format? Or will photobucket jpeg do the trick?
