Whilst it is sad for him, his family and his supporters, unless they can provide evidence that he is innocent then there is nothing they can do i guess

Just stop this nonsense.

why? he was convicted of hitting some fellow in the head with a brick, causing him a fractured skull. Convicted.

So, either one of the "several others" arrested is a fucking rat and the whole group conspired to set him up for a fall, or, he did it. I'm sure the interviewing officers didn't simply use Occam's Razor but actually reconstructed events from all accounts given.

teedles, from what I remember there was very little evidence, and questions about the way the Bulgarian police conducted the investigation. I believe that in the UK he would not have been convicted because of a lack of evidence...

really? in that case I retract my statement. I was assuming he was not convicted in any frivolous manner.

Someone else has actually admitted to doing it yet wasn't convicted or investigated for that matter....

really? that's some mess up indeed. I'm frankly appalled. Has the person who admitted guilt done so before a magistrate or something? because in that case it's time to get some protesters together tbh.

So, the home secretary's team go through all evidence provided and the summary is that there is nothing new to change the original verdict. I honestly don't see what the problem is. As someone else pointed out did the other fan admitting to doing it, actually do so in a statement. Or is it just some idiot shooting his mouth off to look big.

To be honest he is damn lucky they asked for him to serve his time in the UK and not be still stuck in Sofia.

He was at some point going to turn himself in, it was well documented in the Liverpool Echo. But he changed his mind and then retracted what he said....

It's the fact they refused to even investigate the claims of the two people who admitted the crime -they put out statements admitting their guilt and that Shields was not even there at the time, they withdrew them after Shields was found guilty anyway. So no new evidence was considered because our government and the Bulgarian government both refuse to consider anything that will affect the original verdict.

It is our government not wanting to upset the Bulgarian government by overruling their verdict.

Their statements and admission of guilt do not actually exonerate him. Especially given the two that 'confessed' have fairly readily apparent ulterior motives. Also the evidence given by the two supposed 'real' attackers is riddled with holes, not least of those being the way in which they gripped the stone and the shape of it.

He was stupid enough to get directly involved in a beating, whether or not he actually delivered the fatal blow is a technicality. Let him rot a while longer under joint venture.

That's a foolish comment. He WAS NOT there, end of story. I suggest you read the whole story again before you make such comments as this, the dood shouldn't even be in prison. The fact that they are even asking for a pardon is a concession the family are making just to get him released.

As said by a poster earlier, this is more about politics than Michael actually being the perpetrator - which he wasn't. Straw knows it, everyone else knows it - apart from you it would seem. Else Jack Straw would have firmly slammed the door shut yesterday in his comments. He did the opposite. There are criteria to be met to get a pardon, Michael's not done that yet. But I am certain it is in the pipeline - even a Liverpool member of the Labour party yesterday was quoted as saying the decision yesterday made him ashamed to be a Labour party member.

Enough said imo, get this guy out of prison so he can pursue the legal shit that he needs to do to clear his name and then sue the Bulgarian judiciary via the European court.

Hold on now -it was claimed he was not there by himself and the two that came forward. That is not proof he was not. Unless you can provide us some?

I am not the one under scrutiny here, Michael will have to do that. The reported facts have been in the Liverpool Echo for the duration of Michael's sentence after Liverpool football club's victory in Istanbul. Google is your friend on that one.

The head story on why Michael Shields was refused a pardon is in today's front page of the Liverpool Echo as headline.

You can see it via icLiverpool - European Capital of Culture 2008 premier site for Liverpool LFC Everton EFC football daily news, sport and listings headlines .

But to get the whole story you will have to search and read that because I am not doing that for ya, that's a whole crap load of links to post and I am not doing it if google has already done that.

Yeah I have read a few stories on it, but you'll excuse me if it seems the liverpool based stories are quite biased. It's your topic, I'm not accusing you of anything, but I am questioning the logic of the withdrawn admissions of guilt, and I think it's only natural for teedles and binary to do the same.

Of course it will be biased, it's a Liverpool story about a Liverpool lad. Your logic is sensible, yet flawed. You can't go about saying 'tha bastard' deserves everything he got when you earlier said that the whole proceedings were fundamentally flawed. The dood didn't even get a fair trial in my eyes - that's not bias, that's based on what I've read about the case, and believe me when it comes to the law and upholding or challenging it. The Echo has done it's fair share for the hack trade in getting things right, and in the opposite, it's very rarely been sued successfully.

It has good investigative journalists. Believe me, if this thing stank, I'd be telling it to ya, especially seeing as I have a week placement with them a week on Monday. I wouldn't have any qualms whatsoever about agreeing with you, which I don't.

The arguments made previously were made without the full facts or rather just snip reading which is common amongst us all as we read news ;)

Ex-fucking-eactly.

Strangely, the police require this little thing called "evidence" and understand that human beings can and do lie occasionally...

Politics have influence over almost everything - what's your point?

Sorry but i'm more inclined to believe the BBC and Indy's reporting of this than a Liverpool rag known for their support of him.

Then again, if i remember correctly, you don't have to prove innocence.

So if there's no proof he was there...

Very mature, well done, you truly are an inspiration and show such remarkable example.

In your attempt to be the best "anti-tohtori guy" ever, you've become even worse you claimed i was.

I applaud your feat sir.

Not to mention; "under THE control". Seeing as you like the grammar-nazi stuff :p

Something is wrong. Switch the tazer for a flamethrower. And the policeman should be a 4 meter tall finnish cave-troll!

Ok so he's a two metre tall Finnish forum troll instead? :(

Because making emotive appeals based on the same paper i have said is clearly biased on the topic will change my mind.

To quote one of my favourite movies
Col. Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I think I'm entitled.
Col. Jessep: *You want answers?*
Kaffee: *I want the truth!*
Col. Jessep: *You can’t handle the truth!*

Here's an unemotive, unbiased piece from the BBC. A good piece of reporting rather than the piece by the Echo that tries to form your opinion for you very clearly in it's first paragraph.

BBC - Inside Out - North West - Michael Shields - miscarriage of justice?

As it clearly states 2 paragraphs from the end (direct quote from article, talking about

Since the attack Martin's (the injured) life has changed dramatically and he says that he's not able to do most of the things he used to do.

He remembers that on the night of the attack, he witnessed trouble and came out of Big Ben's cafe to calm things down.

Martin says that he saw his attacker's face: "He was like two metres away from me so I saw his face. I saw his T-shirt. I know very well who hit me and who threw the stone."

He's convinced it was Michael Shields.

"Absolutely certain. And it's not only me it's like 20, 22, 23 witnesses that saw the incident. All of them say 100% that it's him."

I think that's the important bit at the end there, don't you? TWENTY PLUS WITNESSES. One or two - fair enough balances out. Twenty. Generally speaking, one does not take the word of two or three proven liars (proven by their retraction of statements and confessions etc) and the accused above 20 (TWENTY) witnesses in a court of law.

Or do you think that this Martin chap is likely to have imagined it all including the face of his attacker?

Edit: To head off your next argument, while he may be able to legally secure his release with changes in EU law, that is not the same thing as being innocent and we both know it.

If the above doesn't make you see reason that perhaps this footballer isn't as innocent as he claims nothing will, either way i'm out...

Don't take it personally, but i think you are pretty biased on this one, whereas i came in with no opinion and formed it from articles on the subject that i felt were balanced.
