It just happened a min ago if any have seen that surtees guy crash when the wheel hit him.

Massa was driving at high speed something flew in the air and hit him in the helment, he came to a shicane straight after and plowed through it no turning and then went straight into the tire wall :( he's been flown away in a chopper now. But its scary to watch the camera on the roof plow into the wall at full speed.

hope he's alright

EDIT: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/2009-07-25-3554669816_x.htm

Not much news or pics as it happened mins ago, but im sure something will come up soon

Hope hes ok, not my favourite F1 driver but would hate anything worse to happen, never thought I'd see another f1 death in my life.

You like 87 with terminal cancer or something?

I'm sure I'll live to see another few F1 deaths.

Well he's in a medically induced coma for the next 48 hours so fingers crossed. Gutted as he's still my favourite driver of the lot... and then in the race Alonsos wheel came flying off too which could have been equally nasty as we know.

Sadly, although Barrichello as an example has said something needs to be done really, there is nothing that can be done about these things. We've seen cars have some unbelievable crashes yet the wheels still remain attached but stopping them coming off at 150mph in Surtees case, it's a luck thing sadly... random parts coming off in Massas case, that again can't be stopped 100% and even with something simple like replacing the wheels in Alonsos case, it's human error which is always going to happen.

Motorsports are inherantly dangerous but safety is being improved all the time; maybe put more emphasis on this but again, human error will still be present no matter what is done.

pit ppl not getting enough sleep = mistakes gets made.

just make an unbreakabale rule that the pit ppl MUST have atleast 8 hours of good sleep a night starting a week before any contest (and during if it takes that long). then i think we will se alot less of this shit.

but as it is now they can work for 2 days straight with 0 sleep trying to get a car ready.

Indeed, and Barrichello is being lined up for the world Mario Kart championships after showing his skills on Saturday.

I'm sorry, but that's the post of a muppet.

Human beings = mistakes getting made.

I don't sleep 8 hours any night ever, I function perfectly well on 6 most nights, often less, and just how would you check/enforce that anyway? You clearly have no understanding of motorsport whatsoever. It's dangerous, people will get hurt, sometimes people will die. All that can be done is being done, and will be done, to make it safer, but you can't legislate for everything.

In the case of Alonso's wheel coming off, the mechanic failed to lock the nut in place which is the failsafe introduced to prevent wheels falling off. It was human error, on both the mechanics part, and the chief mechanics part for lifting the lolipop before the wheelman raised his arm. The team then failed to radio Alonso to tell him to pull over. They are being punished for this (although I would imagine they will be allowed to race in Valencia on appeal, probably under a suspended ban), I doubt any amount of sleep would stop people screwing pit stops up, and the punishment will focus the minds of Renault, and the rest of the teams about informing drivers of potentially dangerous issues.

watching the news today, apparently Michael Schumacher had said if he is asked to replace massa for the rest of the season he will more than happily say yes. would be good to see him make a come back.

That statement was rubbished - or more correctly quoted out of context. That was in regards to a permanent drive. His agent has said he WOULD consider being Massa's temporary replacement. That would be one hell of a PR stunt.

When Jenson Button was on "Patrick Kielty : Almost Live", he admitted that he watches porn when his girlfried is away.
That makes him a winner my my opinion. :)

Anyone else see the Massa interview? I would have so liked him to be well enough to be able to race and to tell Schumacher to get back in his box!
