No i'm not a fan of wiki because it can be influenced by muppets like you, at what stage are you goin to break out "Rule Britainnia".

I have alot of good mates from the UK & thank god the not as pompous & arrogant as u. Its people like you that make people cringe and use the words like bigot & arsehole. But the surprising thing is your royal family is german, u speak a german dialect and have very little indigenous population... go figure

Yes you are right our Royal family is German and we are made up of lots of different cultures, whats your point? It still funny when people like you bleat on about how hard done by you are by us when you aren't :)

As for indigenous people, exactly the same can be said of Ireland or any other northern European country.

Its not pompous or arrogant to comment on and defend ones country (verbally ofc) when people are blaming the worlds problems on the UK. You came out with some rather fanciful ideas and i corrected you, if you can't take that then it is you that is arrogant, or stupid, or both?

A big speaker of gaelic are you? Or are you just running out of ideas?

Personally i am happy to leave the history where it is, its not me that started blaming the worlds problems on the Empire or the UK now is it? I have friends from all over Europe, they don't feel the need to have a go at the UK at every given opportunity.

We can start on how western democracy (for all its failings) is built on the British model, with the magna carta and so on. How about the industrial revolution in the north of England and the Midlands changing the world? Or maybe our advances in science?

You namedrop these things and seem more than willing to take credit for them, yet anything remotely negative such as colonialism carried out by the British you conveniently forget. Either forget it all as the past or remember them both, you can't have it both ways.

No, I will happily accept that we have done wrongs in the past, name a country that hasn't.
Its the people that go on and on about how bad we are trying desperately to find a reason for the worlds problems in an effort to make themselves feel better that I have a problem with.
The current troubles in Africa have nothing at all to do with colonialism, they are caused be greedy corporations and tribal hatred. chucking money at the problem only makes it worse because it ends up going to the corrupt, rarely to the people that need it.

There is alot of good we can do in the continent, such as slashing third world debt and some form of UN backed military intervention in places like Darfur, i just don't like your attitude, like when you said 'Fuck Africa' that is a really offensive, to me anyway.

Once again I agree, but its not going to happen because for one thing we can't be expected to be everywhere at once and secondly it is not effecting us in any way, except for the odd news broadcast, which to be brutally honest isn't going to make governments take action. The reason we go into the middle east is because of oil and the effects it has on the global economy, a stable middle east is good for the economy. Why does everyone wait for the UK and America to get involved, why can't the French army go in? or the Swedish army? Again, people having a pop at us for not doing anything there should be asking their own governments first. Why should we be expected to put our lives on the line when nobody else will? Aside from the fact that we get whined at by other countries for taking a stand, what possible motivation is there for us to get involved? If you look at any conflict in the past twenty years the UK and US has spent the most both financially and in lives lost in these conflicts (discounting the native population ofc) while the rest of the world on the whole stands behind us moaning.

Now saying "fuck em" was just a bit of fun really, this thread isn't a serious debate on the problems in Africa, its a thread of people whining about the UK for causing them and not going in there to save the day.

In summary, I think something should be done, but why should we be the only ones expected to send troops and equipment?

Well as long as they run around seeing their Tribe instead of their country they will continue to have problems. Yes there are a lot of things we can do to help, but sending ton after ton of food wont help them. I remember someone saying.

Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.
Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.

It's a shame the saying a load of bollocks isn't it?

You would have thought that if we did, they'd be advancing a little bit by now but the situation now is hardly any bloody different to what is what x amount of years ago, which is why I think live aid is a load of complete tosh!

Don’t get an Irishman onto the topic of Britain, there’s hundreds of years of bitterness and resentment involved.

Israel is a whole different situation for a whole different thread.

How are the Irish plans to "save teh worldz!!!!" coming along by the way? done anything yet, or are you waiting for us to put our necks on the line still?

I'm not the biggest fan of the Irish but just because they don’t roll tanks over everyone’s front lawn isn’t any reason to mock them.

In fact staying out of other people’s business can sometimes be a harder decision then getting involved, maybe situations like Iraq wouldnt be quite so bad now if cooler heads had prevailed?

We have soldiers currently involved as part of UN forces in Kosovo, Lebannon and at this present moment in time we are waiting to go into Darfur with a 4500 strong French/Irish UN force, but guess what nobody will give air support because there is nothing to be gained there apart from humanity reasons...............

You make it sound like u were forced into the gulf war, iirc only 2 countries were in favour Uk & USA........

We weren't forced into the gulf war, the motivation for it was oil though, whether its a good thing or not is another matter... I think we should go into other places to help, such as Africa or the west bank (even though we would probably be accused of being colonial again) but I will ask again, why should we have to be the first to act? why can't other countries go in and have a handful of back up from us? Its all good and well sending a couple of thousand peace keepers in but when it comes to full on assault, ships, planes infrastructure we are always expected to do it first.

Some are leaders some are followers Raven . Our great nation happens to the courage to lead from the front. Btw do the irish have a military airforce? And if so if Paddys flying bombers does the % chance of friendly fire increase?:p

Ya see there ya go on ur world crusade again, u still dont get it. No other country want to go to war only the usual warmongers. You say u went to the gulf war for oil, how was that any different from ur colonial days when you stripped & divided countries.

Your country has learned nothing and are a bad role model for world peace.

We plough our own furrow and would much prefer other options than invasion.

Yes we dont have an air force

Jupiter sorry to go off topic, but a point you raised about dividing countires made me curious and a quick goggle hasn't given me and clear answers.
Did Ireland exist as a single political enitity before the invaisions (yes Cromwells was probaly the most injust, but its been a fairly gradual take over over a few centuaries)?
Tried google-ing irish history but I can only see reference to induvidual kingdoms rather than a single seat of power.

Ireland was a British colony until 1922 when it became a "free state" which divided the country between north and south

Aye, plenty on the division, I was just wondering what it was before the Invasions as I'm struggling to find anything other than it it being rivial kingdoms (that had a "Ceremonial" high king according to one site),

Was just curious thats all.

Look up Tuatha De Danann, Milesians, Firbolg, Tara, Cuchullain, Conor MacNessa, Conn of the Hundred Battles etc

Aye, for the most part but to be fair to him everything seems pretty sketchy and anything concerning the actualy history seems to has a unionist or nationalist bias unfortunately. Tara was fairly useful thing to look up though again linked to the high king, but it does appear that it wasn't a single nation I stand corrected.

All very off topic though, was orignally going to make a sarcastic commernt that wouldn't of added much anyway. But thought I should atleast get my facts straight first :p

I can see you are just being silly now :) You either want us to help or you don't? What use is sending a couple of thousand people into an area just to observe them killing each other, we have the news for that. A peace keeping force does nothing, it isn't allowed to intervene. Was it you that mentioned Kosovo earlier? That was a peace keeping force and it did nothing at all to stop the killing it was only when we went on the offensive that the region became relatively stable.

Look at Zimbabwe, the only way to fix that region would be to remove Robert Mugabe from power and the only way to do that would be by force. Are you seriously suggesting a peace keeping force will make any difference at all in Zimbabwe or the Sudan?

Ireland was invaded shortly after England by the Normans and was ruled separately. Cromwell gave parts of northern Ireland to his troops after the English civil.

Ireland, the British Invasion

It wasn't a British colony at all, not in the same way parts of Africa and the east were, it was just part of Britain, like Scotland or wales is. If people want to whine to anyone about it whine at the normans
