Favourite Author(s)? the proper one

OK, my first post in this section and I'm going to see what authors other people like. Me personally, I'm into Fantasy mostly, though I like some adventure fiction.

SO my authors, yes, plural.

David Eddings,
James Barclay,
David and Leigh Eddings (Though I prefer the books David wrote solo as the books they've written together tend to be a bit samey)
Raymond E Feist,
Trudi Canavan,
James Clemens,
Magaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

Also, if you can find it I recommend a series called the Lightbringer Trilogy by Oliver Thompson. Very dark, very atmospheric and full of imagery.

And Clive Cussler. I love this guy, only he could write a whole series of books where the main character is a slightly chauvanistic, somewhat arrogant man getting into far more unlikely scrapes than any man could possibly get into and make it all sound perfectly reasonable and plausible.

I never read..

The only 6 books I've read is the Harry Potter serie and they've blown me away every time

Other books just doesn't do the same for me! Tried reading LotR.. /yawn! Same goes for The Da Vinci Code etc

I choked my way through the Heroes and Demons (whatever the first Langton book was) but couldn't get through Da Vinci Code. Its written in a way which reminds me awfully of William Shatner's acting style.

angels and demons :< also deception point is quite good an i LOVED the devinci code

any thing by colin bateman is good but the dan starky series are the best (divorcing jack is first an thier about 8 i think) also the murphys law/murphys revenge are good

and dean koontz rox too, specially the frankinstien series (just ordered book 3 <3)

Jack Vance - Tales of the dying earth kicks so much ass
Jacqueline Carey - Seriously, read the Kushiels Dart series; awesome story + lots of kinky sex!
George RR Martin - Ok so book 4 was a bit slow, first 3 are amazing
Steven Erikson - Gotta love the scale
Scott Lynch - Lies of Locke Lamora
Raymond E Feist & Janny Wurts - Daughter of the Empire series (better than any of feists own)
Gemmell - Lion of Macedon / Sword in the storm

Can someone explain the popularity of Trudi Canavan? Her books are like fantasy for 4 year olds >.<

lord of the ring books is a hard nut to crack theres about 150 - 300 pages of intro and character development before anything really happen. if you manage to get past all that the books are just awesome....

Anyone here tried to read the Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake? One of my favourite stories, but his writing style is quite unique. 20 pages of heavy descriptive writing for every 1 page of plot. Massive amounts of character development for people not involved in the story. Lots of seemingly irrelevant subplots and characters that just...stop at strange places and never reappear.

Worth persevering with though...once you get used to the authors style, it's a great read and one of the best-developed settting for a fantasy story around
