The answer is fairly simple: Just like the fairer sex, we are programmed to automatically notice what we find attractive. Look at the animal kingdom - the one with the best display (courtship, visual display etc) is the one that gets his/her end away. A good figure is just part of the courtship display.

As for the younger girls, 3 reasons for most blokes i suppose: 1) Marco Polo syndrome 2) Easy meat comparatively 3) Fresher.
