He was in a plane that crashed that was ... or was going to tow an election banner. The news didnt say anything about anyone else in the plane so it was a good assumption that he was flying it. Therefore even if the plane didnt belong to him at that moment in time it was his plane.
As all first news casts go it was quite inaccurate but was all i had to go on.

It sucks to hear of any aircraft crashing.
In the current climate of the times, the media will seize upon the slightest incident to help raise the cry about the evil deadly little aircraft and further the push to regulate flying out of the reach of the common man.
I hope the pilot is OK.

OK. I guess that's probably a little hard to get without the context.
Over here at least, General aviation and in particular it's baby brother experimental aviation is under fire from the media (hype hype hype) and an increasingly growing Government. Evidentially these little aircraft will be raining death and destruction from above, killing us all and therefore need to be so heavily regulated that none but the elite will have the ability to fly a light aircraft.
Any light aircraft incident is therefore fair game to the media to whip into a frenzy of orgasmic vomit furthering their cause to keep these upstarts who have the balls to think they can pilot an aircraft of their own firmly on the ground.

What I want to know is why Farage was on the plane. If he's electioneering then surely he should be knocking on doors, rather than going on a jolly on a plane he's rented to (apparently illegally) fly annoying messages around our heads?

Explain? What sort of regulation? Increased regulation with obtaining licences, or required maintenance (if you were to own your own light aircraft)?

How about increased regulation requiring two yearly checks (at $200 each) accompanied by a form (with a $100 lodging fee) to get a specific I.D. (seperate from your issued licence which is subjected to exactly the same checks) which costs a further $50 issuing fee. All in the name of "security". Without one of these, you cannot get to your aircraft to take off again should you happen to land at any of the security controlled airfields in this country.
Then there is 2 metre high fences erected around most public airfields protected by push button combination locks. These things are about as secure as a paper bag, yet for some reason we need them for our own protection.
We already have some of the strictest maintenance regulations in the world. Nothing much needs to be done there. Obtaining the licence is not much different now than when I first got mine back in the late 80's. It just costs a bit more. CASA has implemented a user pays scheme so it costs anywhere from $50 to $200 to simply lodge a form. For example, it costs about $400 for a medical examination. Then where it once was free to lodge, it now costs $200 "processing fee".

Greedy councils are eyeing off their local airfields with developers lining their pockets with incentive to sell their infrastructure down the river and the entire time, the media is cheering them on. Interesting - bit of a shame really.
Aviation in NZ (security wise) is laughable by comparison. You get an initial police check (called a Fit and Proper Person test), which you send off to CAA with your PPL application. That is then valid for 5 years (I think), within which if you then get a CPL or IFR you don't have to get any extra security checks. If the Fit and Proper Person test does lapse, then you simply fill out another (the actual information from the police costs nothing to obtain).
Aircrew licences here are pretty shoddy too - they're effectively a laminated piece of paper, with the NZ Coat of Arms as a watermark. There's no real security in the licence itself and you could quite easily produce one with Photoshop. That, along with some form of photo ID will get you air side at all airports / aerodromes within NZ (assuming you actually have an aircraft there). All the times I've had to go into a terminal and then get back to the apron I've only ever shown the licence and no other ID. They are aiming to change the licences to something that's a little more professional looking.
Medicals are fairly cheap, my last Class 1 cost me just under the $200 mark.
