Farmers

No UK farmers can export meat while we have foot and mouth. ALso many farmers cannot sell meat here. It's ppl's livings being fooked. The longer it goes on then the more likely it is to spread to other countries. It has to be wiped out. Innoclulated animals cannot be sold either.

All these "animal-lovers" who are whinging that the animals do not need to be killed and that it's all just done for economic reasons have obviously never been in the country in their lives and certainly not seen an animal suffer with this disease. Would they rather the every cloven-hoofed animal in the country from now on was sentenced to a life of pain and scabs because we were too squeamish to do waht was necessary to eradicate it.

Not that they give a rats arse about logical arguments anyway :)

Re: M000-BQ

Penry covered the facts quite well.

Here's some more:
- F+M is rife in certain third world countries
- Animals infected with F+M produce less milk yield
- Their meat quality is also reduced
- Countries free of F+M do not accept imports from those infected

If we can't control the outbreak, we cut off a big source of both imports and exports.

They are still not exactly sure how the disease was spread. The last outbreak in the EU was in Portugal in 1997.

There has been talk of shooting birds to stop them spreading the disease, as well as wild animals, including badgers and foxes (oh how those hunters will chuckle).

Think about this issue very carefully. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who loses money or who wins money. Go to the BBC News site and read some of the comments from the farmers who have lost everything. Sure, they will get compensation and eventually rebuild their stock - but these fellow human beings have had to destroy animals that they spent quite a few years raising, and most all of them get attached to their herds in some sense.

Enough of all this "fecking farmers", they're people like you and I. Perhaps more like I than some of you, on reflection.

Actually I heard that immunisation isn't that effective.

I see what you mean. Just read an article on saudi infections reaching 2500 animals (all of which were immunised !!!)

Guess its all down to profit margins.
Reminds me of that old adage :
Garbage (shit) in - Garbage (shit) out.

Me feels more sorry for the people in the rural areas that are relying on tourism, as these peeps are fooked now, and no compo from the goverment either.

As for burgers - nooooo , if you could see the crap thats put in processed meat products - yuck!!! Just keep grinding that crap in there boys.
hmmm.

I think much of the FMD is self-inflicted. Although not officially investigated, widespread bed'n'breakfasting (moving animals around to specially for subsidy inspections) is believed by some to be behind the rapid spreading. If just licit moving of animals was to blame, France would have the same scale of outbreaks.

True. But it's not very nice for the many responsible farmers who are now fucked because of the less responsible ones :(
