been swallowed by oracle, good times for all. Specially all the shops running sparc+oracle db systems - even tho opteron+oracle is better.

I'm pleased, on the whole. I work with big suns though, I wonder what is going to happen with the M's and stuff. I kinda hope that Larry knows to leave the cpus and OS stuff to the sun people :)

we're getting rid of all of our solaris kit, except the badass 6900s that run our big DBs. TBH tho a $30k opteron box would do better these days than the giant old 40+ core sparc monsters.

heh you guys should look at the T series. I love them to bits. 8 cores, 128 threads :D

now that really depends on the workload. For many problems that are paralellisable and throughpout-oriented its fine.

I agree it's poo for single threaded apps, though you can run 124 of them with complete freedom :)

We've benchmarked our oracle db (Arseload of plsql on a few TB of data doing 50-100k ops/sec) and find it actually runs better on fewer, faster cores. Implementing shared locks accross that many threads which span that many CPUs is a pita, all sorts of timing problems occur that go away when you have similar number of cycles available but on fewer cores.

Obviously for something like a fucking massive webserver doing trivial php/http stuff 128 threads would be pro to handle 500k connections a second or whatever.

sure, we have the big db's on M's and SF25k's and stuff too. I do love websphere and grid stuff on the T's though :)
