3DS Max and ZBrush are currently state of the art. A couple of companies are still using Maya, but it at least for games, 3DS seems to be the No 1 choice. For modelling respectively skinning, you should also take a look at Photoshop or PaintshopPro. "Naked" models are not that exciting. :)

For getting started, just browse the web. There are tons of tutorials out there. It´s kinda hard to say where you should start, because I don´t know where you´re standing. If you have any questions, drop me a PM.

3ds max is pretty hard, but you can do some pretty cool shit with it.

Maya=fun
3D=architech
Lightwave=Big things like mountains'n'sh*t.

That's about it in a nutshell.

And about "how they do it in games". With hours of work, lousy pay and big pimply a-holes as a boss.

Check out 3ds max and Maya, Im pretty sure maya do a free student copy or something, maybe max do as well now. The companies I worked for used both to some degree. Youll also need a 2D package for making/editing textures, photoshop is kinda the standard.
