Maybe it has always sucked and I'm new to the suckery, but in the beginning it was a very useful tool to stay in touch with my extended family who I can't visit nearly as often as I want to and friends that had moved away. However, of late I've noticed that Facebook has become the playground for bragging and pissing contests. It's really, really quite sad to watch people I once knew and respected get neck deep in their own delusions of grandeur and self importance.

Anyway, after a google, I came across this site dedicated to harvesting the best bragging updates.

facebrag this

Some of them are classics; enjoy.

Hardly use it anymore, its become a bore.

Its just flled up with people posting up a million Farmville applications or other assorted ones. You can block them from being viewed but you still get millions more applications spamming the shit out of the newsfeed.

I've been feeling the same recently. You find yourself drawn into this pissing contest where you have to constantly prove yourself with status updates and pictures.
Started using facebook lite but I find it to buggy.

Beginning to suck? It started sucking as soon as they introduced applications. :(

You should be friends with less retards then. Also, it takes a couple of minutes and you'll never see any of them again. Hardly the worst spam in the world.

This isn't school, if you can't handle people posting things on facebook without trying to compete or keep up with them then you have some immaturity issues. But then this is already known by your thread where you decided to get a new car simply because some of your friends had also got new cars.

Got to agree with Wazz, facebook privacy controls can cut out a lot of the shit.

It says more about your "friends" than facebook if you are feeling this way.

Sometimes it's hard to gauge though Waz. I'll be honest and say that most of my friends on Facebook aren't friends at all, they're just people I've met on the journey of life (high school, university, previous jobs, friends of friends who wanted to nose at my page) and I know / knew them only superficially. They seemed like perfectly nice people at the time, but their online/Facebook habits are rediculously irritating and I simply do want to de-friend them - but is that too petty?

It says more about your "friends" than facebook if you are feeling this way.

Posted after I replied to Wazz, but my post essentially addresses that point.

You don't have to G, just edit your news feed preferences. You can also block most applications from spamming you or reading your profile info in the applications settings.

I tend to stick people on limited profiles if they annoy me, that way I don't see their shit and they can't comment on anything I do.

Just hide their status updates, then you don't even have to de-friend them. As well as retarded status updates though, I also find "X has become a fan of rice, dancing on ice, crisps, that feeling you get when you eat a cream egg, ant and dec, ninja turtles, people who drink their own urine, walking with dinosaurs and 3523 other profiles" very annoying. It's as though some people have to "become a fan" of every object or sensory experience they have every encountered in their life.

You need to have friends for FB to work. I'm so unsociable that I don't even have an FB. Put it this way, if I *did* have an FB, I would have 7-8 people on it... and I see them on a regular basis anyway so what's the point?

Yeah I've hidden as many things as possible, it's amazing the shit people find to do on Facebook. Didn't know about the limited profiles thing, I will definitely check that out - one of my current work colleagues (I've only befriended ex colleagues) added me (and I knew it was a bad idea to accept, but I went with it) and is forever making comments to my boss on a Monday morning about things I did at the weekend. It's fucking irritating, I should really just man up and say "please fucking stop it k thanks bye" to him.

Stick him on a limited profile for sure, you can edit what pictures he sees, what status updates, what info you have on your profile, where you have commented. You can even lock off full access to your wall.

This should go on that facebrag website, sounds like you're saying your friends are superior!

Or I'm more selective of who I allow as a friend and the ways in which I limit people?

You need some friends to make it work but you don't need to have hundreds. I have my immediate family and a few really good friends. Its a useful way to contact more than one of them at a time. And you can share pictures etc

Christ that facebrag thing is a bit lame. Just comes across as an incredibly bitter nerd ranting about everyone else's facebook page.

He's worse than they all are.

Well I'd say he was as bad as they are, but in a way I do understand why someone has gone to such lengths to publicise such Facebook statuses. To find such a site wasn't a surprise, afterall I was finding it irritating to read about people's brags who were on my own contact list.

It's not the things they brag about, it's the persistance of the bragging, it's the attention seeking behaviour which I find insulting because they think that I actually give a flying fuck. It's also quite disappointing because people who I thought were quite decent turned out to be crass, vulgar and self obsessed. It's not the sort of personality traits I want in a friend.

I agree with much of what has been said here. Facebook has been fantastic for getting in contact with friends from school. Its been good for a couple of reunions also. Nice to see people whom I thought would do well, do well, and nicer to see people who were twats are still twats .

Nowt wrong with Facebook if the people in your life are your friends.

Nowt worse than Facebook if the people in your life decide to fuck you over.

Ahhh that brings me on to the next most cringeworthy thing on Facebook - people's mum's (mostly girl's mum's) trying waaaaay too hard to be cool/young by commenting on photos of their nights outs or people in their 50s saying "wow, what a rad party" - GRANDAD PLEASE.

Seriously, I don't want my parents or anyone else's parents knowing what's happening on my social agenda let alone making out of touch, try-too-hard comments.
