F1 - Lewis Hamilton

Am I the only one astounded by this guy? He's British, and actually LIVING UP (touch wood) to the rediculous ammount of pressure and hype that both the press and the general public typically place upon any English sportsman/woman that shows even a glimmer of promise. It's so depressing usually, seeing the papers rant on about how "person X" is going to acheive this and that, and then seeing the very same papers taunting and jeering when (not suprisingly) their expectations aren't met.

But Lewis has just sat there in one of the most pressurising environments in sport, and calmly played down peoples expectations, while still exceeding them. It's a really nice change to see someone with genuine talent being so humble about it. That kind of thing has been missing from sport and the world in general for a helluva long time IMO :/.

Anyway, thoughts? Even if it's just rantings about how good/overrated you think he is.

p.s. I put the F1 tag up there like people do for the football threads, so anyone coming here and going "omgz f1 is boring" is just being a muppet for not reading the thread title and staying clear

So i'm finnish, sue me...our athletes are notorious for being "humble" about it. Most interviews our guys do are just borderline apathic X)

Raikkonen is my second favourite driver (He was first, until i saw what Lewis could do xD) I love his interviews, the one word answers he gives are brilliant.

Forgot to say that yes, Lewis is a really good driver, have to see how the overall goes. Hope he don't "crack" under pressure or get uppity.

tbh put him in a proper F1 car (talking back in days of mansell/sena/prost etc) (thats when ppl use to overtake each btw) and he'll be torn apart. Him sitting in these remote controll cars doesnt prove a thing now-adays.

But sure, he can handle the pressure i guess.

Yes it is different now days, and for good reason. Was just a little bit to much danger back then and some real tragidies. That said it possibly gone too far.

However there is still alot of skill involved in the races, especially if your car is not as good as your opposition, and Ferrari's cars are by far the best. This means Hamilton is working hard for his results and needs to drive well. To say there no overtaking is a bit odd, especially as Hamilton passed both Ferrari's in the first bend, even after a poor start off the line. Then he was overtaken twice and managed to retake it straight back (that said bad driving by a nutter in a ferrari.)

Alot of hype around him, but then millions have been spent on training since he was picked up as a boy driving go-karts and turned into a possible future F1 Champion. Wish the lad luck

I'd like to see you handle a car with uber sensitive steering at 190mph, with 800bhp under the hood.

Does it proove a thing? Yes, hes a skilled driver.

tbh I doubt he will keep living up to expectations but i hope he does.

But yea back on topic, I am pretty impressed tbh initially i thought it'd just be a battle between the 2 ferrari's and Alonso, but hat's of to him for getting a great team to debut for and doing something with this.
I do kinda agree with mauness, the glory days of F1 are long gone, nowadays it's more technical, speed will get you to the front of the grid in the qualifying, but during the race it's more pit stop strategies that will win you the race.

It's true, you won't see racing like this again anytime soon. I havn't given up on F1 though, I still find it entertaining to watch. You can tell they are working behind the scenes to make it more entertaining to watch. The problem faced by the FIA is that they NEED to make it a safer sport. Remember the ammount of deaths that occured back when the sport was "exciting". I don't think that's a price worth paying for a little more pop.

Nah ... will go to a footballer. Always bloody does it seems. Would be nice though.

For me Senna was by far and away the most talented driver I have ever seen.
