Just finished playing this game (first encounter assault recon) through for the first time and thought it was such a great game that I'd put a post up here recommending it to anyone thinking of playing a first person shooter. Graphically, this absolutely blew away half life 2, doom3 and battlefield 2 and the different views such as bullet time view, the sniper scope and the memory scenes added greatly to just how good the game was.

If you like the ring, you'll love this (got the girl from it in) as it gave me by far the most spine tingling moments I've ever had in a game :p The AI is phenominal, despite the lack of total enemy types there were and I only managed to find one bug which reloading seemed to fix (level9, the barrels scene). Enemies work in groups, jump for cover, flank you, run for reinforcements and every fight seems to be different.

As for the last level, I've never seen a better looking last 15minutes to a game in my life. I'm so tempted to say what happens at the end just to describe it better but I think it'd give away the story too much.

Was a little dissapointed with it myself tbh. Levels/enemies were extremely repetitive, didn't find it particularly scary and the story just plain sucked.

Having said that, it was still very enjoyable - AI was absolutely stunning, and the "bit before the end" was one of the coolest moments in a game ever (shame the actual ending following this was crap) :p

I thought it was absolute cack. Worst ending in a game ever and the ending was also a let down. No doubt graphics are good but the game is just so "samey". No variation at all.

I loved it, even though it suffers from the 'so short you can blink and miss it' problem that most of the decent games nowadays seem to suffer from, it was real nice while it lasted.

The bullet time kinda spoiled it in places - you could use it to get out of dodgy situations where normally you'd have to be good(and lucky)

the melee moves where kinda cool, not used as much as they could've been but still a fairly nice 'fluff' part to the game.

I agree with the scary thing too - this is the only game thats ever made me jump (properly that is, one point in this game made me jump clear off my chair!). :)

I disagree
they ruined it by adding those stupid black clouds indicating that something "scary" was going to happen, (they weren't there in the BETA)

Play the original AVP on Marine-Directors Cut if you want jumps ^^

FEAR is the best fps out there atm...

The story is what it should be, background for the fighting, that keeps you interested by uncovering what is going on bit by bit

Combat is superb: Open areas, enemies using team tactics (flanking, covering fire for rushing friendlies etc)... Even in buildings the AI comes up with ways to go around you, jumping over or crouching under obstacles (no this desk doesn't mean the way is blocked nor does the breakable glass pane behind it) while the teamates pin you into a corner.
If u don't kill fast (slowmo helps a lot, due to greater accuracy) or keep all the tacticals aspects of the area in mind you will soon find yourself surrounded...

Ofc if u cheat or abuse the slowmo (kill as many as possible with slowmo, run away till slowmo is recharged) the combat can become kinda boring...

The horror is well done, even tho you might get used to it as most of the effects won't kill you but help the atmosphere allowing you to relax from the tense fights without taking you out of the environment

It all plays together well and really feels a bit like multiplayer in some situations and thank god we're spared from stupid "let me teleport you over ooops u came out wrong now fight your way there" storyevents and mass bughunting where ur finger starts hurting coz of the excessive fire button use...

Play System Shock 2 if you want jumps and a decent story/uber game :)

As for people saying FEAR is the best FPS? I dont understand that... HL2 beats it in every way, the only exception being enemy AI. HL2 with FEAR AI would be :worthy:

I stopped hl2 at that zombie town coz when they came up with this jump and run stuff after the weak teleport malfunction part and the weak base attack oops alone again stuff i just couldn't stand it anymore
Its just so fucking obvious that this teleporter won't work as it is within the base, why don't they just tell me to run instead of coming up with such crappy explanations ? It doesn't help the story, it doesn't help the gameplay all it does is destroying the atmosphere

Fear wants you to fight alone as well, but gives way better explanations for it creating a kind of atmosphere u can't compare to hl2...
The first real mission dropps you near the harbour with a small team. Via radio they are told to assist you as you're (a specialist) from FEAR. The gate to the mission area is locked tho and their leader ironcally orders you to open the gate saying "Go open the gate, i think we'll need a specialist for this", you leave them alone for just a min to open up and suddenly u start hearing gunfire, hurying back all you find are their skeletons and a short vision of alma tearing them apart...

In HL2 i just did some target practice for no particular reason on the run all the time knowing it would continue to some extended save the world storyline while in fear I instantly wanted to investigate, wanted to find out what is going on and if that means saving the world/city/whatever in the end its fine with me
